If you're feeling adventurous, lowendtalk is quite a deep rabbit hole.
Personally, I use rsync.net for backup stuff. Way better for backup than standard vps because everything you put there is automatically snapshotted every day (you can configure how long you want to keep the snapshot). No full shell access, but you can still use rclone there.
They have metered bandwidth so it's not suitable for OP's bandwindth-heavy usage.
Have you tried downranking (or even blacklisting) the spammy sites on your Kagi search result? That alone is an improvement over Google.
When you have invested thousands (in both hours and $) into the game, you gotta show them trolls who's the boss by leaking military documents.
Search engines funded by ads have this perverse incentive to not give you the best possible results (or at least stop trying so hard to improve their results) so you search more (and thus served more ads). This may not be true for the underdogs (because they're trying to gain marketshare) but seems to be especially true for Google.
Don't wanna spend money to upgrade the closet junk because that's where retired stuff from other devices ended up. Eventually an old SSD would ended up there though.
There is a possible outgoing federation issue but I haven't seen it happen myself, so it might be pretty rare: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/4288
Lemmy's current donation drive is almost reaching 1/3 of their recurring donation goal. If the goal is reached, they'll be able to fund three full time developers. I encourage anyone who can spare ~$10/mo to check the donation page: https://join-lemmy.org/donate
Recently I moved my instance to a cheaper host and use the money I saved for recurring donation to Lemmy. Heck, I probably should host it on my closet for free and donate the money used for renting the VPS but my HDD is so loud it drove me crazy, it's clicking non-stop when I host a Lemmy instance there
After setting up mailcow, configure the mailbox to use an external relay (mailgun, Amazon SES, etc). This will cut down your potential headache since the actual mail delivery is handled by someone else. Now you only need to focus on making sure you can receive mails.
Yes, it literally happened with FMHY's Lemmy instance. Lost access to the original domain, started again from scratch on a different domain, but their users didn't come back and already moved in to other instances.
