There are a lot of instances that allow signups. Go to fediverse observer, filter by registration and country, order by active users and you'll get a decent list.

Or check one of these instances and request an account, just to name a few.

FediDB lists 67 software projects in the Fediverse. Just scroll through it and try whatever suits you.

My personal favorites:

  • PieFed (Threadiverse)
  • PeerTube (Videos)
  • Mastodon (Microblogging)
  • Bookwyrm (Books)

And lately I scrolled a bit through Wafrn, it's a whole different vibe over there. I don't understand much, but that's what I love about it.

On the behalf of the admin and moderation team:

We will not add age-verification unless we will literally be force-shutdown if we don't.

If we do, it will be a one-on-one call in which you show one of us -- personally, on our actual phone numbers or signal or some shit -- your ID and we just put a little mark on your profile saying "yep we verified"

we will not, at any point, ever build age-verification into the software nor rely on AI to do it. We don't fucking want your data, it's a massive risk to have around.

If we can get by without it, we will simply not do it, even if we have to block some countries. The UK is not a "target market" for app.wafrn.net as we have no target market.

Nice game. I'm very bad at it, but it's fun anyway. Sometimes images take minutes to load and I ran into two fetch image errors. Refreshed the page and now everything loads fast.

put ActivityPub in it :)

But seriously, a PeerTube compatible software with a different approach than PeerTube could be good for the federated video ecosystem.

This will be fixed when 1.6.2 is available for YunoHost. We just have to wait for this PR to get merged.

No real schedule. The translation is almost at 100% anyway, but I keep finding strings that were translated automatically which aren't very good. So it's just random checking of strings.

Will have a look at joinfediverse.wiki later. But I can't commit to a fixed schedule. If I see something that needs improvement, I'll try to improve it or gather feedback here or in Zulip chat.

The Fedimap.de is a map of the Fediverse users. Everyone can mark or unmark themselves.

Previously known as "Fedikarte", the project recently got brought back to life under the new name Fedimap. The german community has already been very active adding themselves to the map. Maybe we can get more people from the wider Fediverse to add themselves.

Here's how you add yourself from Lemmy/PieFed:

  • Grab your coordinates by clicking on a location on fedimap
  • Don't use your exact location obviously
  • Send a private message to @fedimap@social.linux.pizza with your coordinates like this:
  • @fedimap !in 54.88889467,23.93083513

Done!

The project's code is available on codeberg.

Good idea. I can help with German translations, some CSS and I have a joinfediverse.wiki account as well. I don't think PieFed is relevant enough for Wikipedia or is it?

A single user PieFed instance

Sure, there's always room for improvement. But a lot of books that weren't available on my instance I could just import from other instances or other sources. I've also got some good recommendations from the Explore feed on Bookwyrm.

Greetings to South Africa

FOSDEM 2026 starts today and there is a Social Web track filled with sessions about Fediverse projects and ActivityPub. The first talk starts at 9:40 UTC.

Schedule

Stream

Matrix Chat: #2026-social-web:fosdem.org

Jon Henshaw interviews Mastodon creator Eugen Rochko about how he got started in software development, what led him to create Mastodon, why Threads interoperability with Mastodon fell flat, what it'll take to get people to switch to the fediverse, why he views Mastodon as a network and not a media platform, and why Mastodon chose ActivityPub.

In the monthly server updates for lemmy.zip/piefed.zip there's a mantra that's repeated every month. I think it's wonderful and can be applied to the Fediverse as a whole.

If you’re new here - WELCOME! I hope you’re enjoying your time here :)

Just one small teeny-tiny request. The greatest gift you can give the Fediverse (Original: Lemmy.zip and Piefed.zip) isn’t money, praise, or interpretive dance (although we would absolutely accept the last one). Its participation.

Upvote the things you like. Start a discussion, debate, or ponder about whether water is wet or merely makes things wet. Make new communities if you don’t see one that fits your oddly specific niche obsession.
(We don’t judge. Well, we try not to judge anyway.)

The fediverse naturally ebbs and flows, tides of people come and go. But if you’ve found yourself oddly attached to this strange little corner of the internet? Wonderful. Help it breathe. Help it grow. Help it be just a tiny bit weirder in the best possible way.

So if you’ve gone to the effort of clicking Sign Up and proving you’re not a robot (unless you are, in which case hello and welcome to our new AI overlords), then please, I beg of you:

Stick around. Add your voice. It really does make this place better.

A Fediverse Enhancement Proposal (FEP) is a document that provides information to the Fediverse community. The goal of a FEP is to improve interoperability and well-being of diverse services, applications and communities that form the Fediverse.

The FEP Process is an initiative of the SocialHub developer community, a liaison of the W3C Social Web Incubator Community Group.

Discovered this today. If you're on the developer side of things or are interested in how the Fediverse / ActivityPub is being built and enhanced, take a look at this codeberg repo.
