the hardware, I've heard many speculate, is for collecting data needed to power embodied AI (actual robots).

so far, US-based "AI" has focused largely on LLMs and disembodied "intelligence". this is just interacting with screens. but getting their proprietary AI models into a real body that moves in the real world (using motors, balance, gyroscopes, accelerometers) will require a ton of training data.

might be bullshit. who knows. either way the goals of AI companies is all the same imo: create perfect slaves to replace workers.

i could be mistaken but wasn't this one of several investigations into Musk owned companies which was halted after the inauguration?

There were so many investigations against tech bros stopped in 2025, it's hard to keep it all straight.

no control or support structures to address their problems

this is a real unmet need. but propping up AI chat bots as the solution, instead of structural changes is somewhat self-defeating. getting people to become dependent on chat bots is exactly the profit model these unethical corporations are counting on.

why are they hosting it on the fucking Internet? I just don't understand the lack of concern for safety. a few years ago leading experts said AI is an existential threat, but I guess after enough rounds of investor funding, the risks magically all disappeared?!

you can also tag people on Lemmy, or at least I can. look for the About User menu then "Add Tag" or "Tag user" from their profile

i think tik tok might be in a position where they must sell in order to continue serving content to American users

https://apnews.com/article/trump-tiktok-china-bytedance-social-media-tariffs-665e46fd5bb555e97c4d7301e07230df

The order was announced as White House officials believed they were nearing a deal for the app’s operations to be spun off into a new company based in the U.S. and owned and operated by a majority of American investors,

the extension only happened because after the TikTok CEO, Shou Chew, threw a big party for right wing influencers during Trump's record breaking $200M ~~bribe acceptance party~~ inauguration, Trump mysteriously halted the order (despite being signed into law) to ban the app.

from the article:

Top TikTok executives reportedly rubbed shoulders with American tech leaders and handed out business cards at an elite pre-inauguration donor event on Sunday featuring members of the Trump administration, as the app’s future in the U.S. remains uncertain.

Tiktok executives including CEO Shou Chew and vice president Michael Beckerman were reportedly on hand at the event, which President Donald and First Lady Melania Trump hosted at the National Building Museum in Washington. They joined a reported guestlist including Vice President JD Vance, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and conservative megadonor Miriam Adelson.

geeze, it's almost like the tech oligarchs told Trump to pause the ban until they could negotiate a way to profit more from acquisition of TikTok (or a newly created US based subsidiary that Bezos is trying to invest in) than by outright banning users access to it, cold turkey.

no, i do not mean Hollywood... that's weird... why would anyone think corporate media means what, marvel movies?

I'm talking about Time Warner, Sinclair, CNN, Netflix, Comcast, Amazon, NBC, Fox, every single source of online professionally written articles, video segments, the evening news, and mainstream platform owned by someone with a net worth exceeding $1 billion dollars. the corporate media, ya know, the ones who manufacture the consent as described in "Manufacturing Consent" or a dozen different media criticism books available at your local library or on youtube (if you prefer).

I'm hoping that too. either way, I'm not advocating hopelessness or doomerism. I'll be working harder than ever this year to decouple my life from corporations and govt reliance. community building, strengthening friendships, helping others when I can. it's going to be a long road ahead and we won't survive as isolated individuals.

I don't think you realize just how long it takes to hire federal employees, or reconstitute entire agencies (like CFPB).

tens of thousands of people forced out, thousands of research grants and projects canceled, hundreds of programs stifled...

this is the end of the federal government as we know it, and it will take a generation (20+ yrs) of back to back Democrat administrations to rebuild it. that's not going to happen.

the oligarchs won dude. kids growing up today will never know how much has been lost. the corporate media will make sure all they know is 'we've always been at war with eastasia''
