I cannot for the life of me figure out what this actually is. But congrats on building it and yay for more federated stuff!

I very much enjoy running into folks from the various crafting communities in other contexts, bumping into Mastodon friends on Lemmy and vice versa and then dropping into each others PeerTube comments.
Irl I live in a small town and absolutely despise not being able to leave the house without running into someone who knows us. But for whatever reason I find it adorable on Fedi 🤷♀️
My other account is on .world so I can use search to forcibly pull things onto at least that server (search for the original URL of the unfederated post or comment and then wait a few seconds). Sometimes doing that will also encourage whatever it was to federate more widely to more servers, but that doesn't seem to be happening as reliably either since the upgrade 🤷♀️
Yup, absolutely nothing I posted from lemm.ee yesterday made it out into the wider world. In fact I'll probably have to manually federate this comment too.
Hopefully they can get to the bottom of it. Maybe next year we need a rule about releasing anything in December when everyone's too busy to bugfix 😅
There's a thread in !liftoff@lemmy.world where people are recommending their fave replacement but tbh pretty much every app gets at least one mention, which one is best probably depends on your priorities!
None of them really meet all my needs (neither did Liftoff, I had to combine it with Summit), so I'm trying to help out by testing !raccoonforlemmy@lemmy.world in the hopes that it could become my holy grail.
A couple of people have tried to get in touch with the dev to no avail. It's already broken for users on the couple of servers that are using 0.19 so only a matter of time for the rest of us, it seems.
Bear in mind Liftoff is probably going to stop working with Lemmy 0.19 so don't get too attached to it 😢
I get that you saw a perceived problem and you're trying to fix it. I get that what you've built is cool on a technical level and it probably feels really terrible to have people be so negative about it. So first of all, none of this is personal at all. But I feel this comment illustrates exactly where the problem lies.
You want to "help people migrate away from Reddit". But I'm not sure what makes you think people need "help" at all, I mean if someone wants to stop using a platform they can just stop using the platform. I was a heavy Reddit user and was in plenty of tiny niche subreddits, but so what? I wanted to leave so I left.
So maybe the real problem is that so many people don't want to leave Reddit, and that disappoints you, and you want to try and convince them that they do? This I could definitely understand, but trying to convince someone you know what they want better than they do themselves is not generally a great tactic.
Most people will just stick with whatever the "best" platform is in terms of showing them content they want to see, and are slow to move to the next thing once the one they're on starts sucking. So if you really want to put your dev skills to use it would make more sense to get stuck in with Lemmy itself and help increase the pace of improvements. A lot of us are happy here, but a lot of people also bounced off due to the jank. And the more we can reduce that bounce rate, the more we can keep people around, the more we're in a position to capitalise whenever the next big wave of newbies hits.
This thread is a great example of the big downside of being on a smaller instance: OP was seemingly unaware and unable to subscribe to many cool communities and was stuck with the "defaults".
Perhaps admins and mods of smaller instances could be doing more to educate their users about how to find stuff in the wider Threadiverse?
When we had the big migration last year everyone quickly learned how to search for a community, how you had to do it twice for it to show up etc. But now it's no longer a common topic of conversation so newer users don't realise, and to make matters worse every single mobile app seems to handle search differently.
Is there some kind of "so, you're on a small instance, here's what that means" type of resource already hanging around somewhere?
