Not even email. Usenet is almost identical to Lemmy. There are many Usenet servers which talk to each other and synchronize their message groups. And you connect to one of them with a local account.

IRC as well but more chat like.

Of course there are differences in the fediverse but the big concepts are hardly new. People are trying to overcomplicate it.

Not VMs but I have way more docker containers. I run most things as containers which keeps the base OS nice and clean and free from dependency hell.

According to the article 19.99 gets you day 1 releases. If you don't need it the new "standard" will get you all the non day 1 for 14.99
