on my last post I wrote device is a redmi 9c. Turns out it's a redmi 10c and the custom ROM I wanted to install https://xdaforums.com/t/rom-13-unofficial-lineageos-20-0-unified-for-redmi-9a-9c-10a-blossom.4609367/ won't work.

Anyhow, to unlock the device the official way I have to identify to their services through a phone line, not internet, and purchase a sim card, which I'm not going to do to experiment with this device.

I have no use for the stock software in the device and I'd rather have anything foss that works or kinda works.

If you ever experimented with this particular model or know what could work, feel free to post an answer.

debian 12.5

most guides I found online are for windows based computers and those that even name linux are outdated.

fastboot devices recognizes the device and I can also boot the phone to fastboot: it shows a black (not blank) screen with the word FASTBOOT printed orange.

I tried following https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/complete-guide-flashing-factory-images-android-using-fastboot-0175277/ but fastboot flashing unlock and fastboot oem unlock return FAILED (remote: 'Token Verify Failed, Reboot the device ')

developer options and OEM unlocking are both activated on the device

genuine question, because I forgot a $20 with the laundry at work and I don't know if the laundry is going to look green or if I'm going to get a white $20 back and clean clothes...

I installed ubuntu xfce 23.04 on a 2014 macbook pro 11.1.

I've been trying to change the mac address with the cli, the same way I do with my main computer (with systemctl, NetworkManager and ip link), but nothing works, even though sudo systemctl status NetworkManager.service shows the NetworkManager as disabled and ip link shows the network's status as down

Bad luck and I cannot change the mac on any macboook?

ETA: on this computer there is a partition with macOS installed. Could this be the reason?

the device is so bloated

I may have inadvertently deleted a boot partition

experimenting with my 2014 macbook pro and several linux distros (xubuntu, mint, fedora)

So far I have 8 partitions:

  • 1 EFI for grub,
  • 1 hfs+ (Linux HFS+ ESP) for OCLP, I think,
  • 1 apfs for the macOS 14 I cannot boot,
  • 2 ext4 for xubuntu and mint
  • 1 brfs for fedora (so it cannot be ext4?)
  • 2 unallocated ones, because I deleted systems I don't want.

I use gparted: the 2 unallocated sections are separated. Is this a problem?

How many partitions are too many for this machine? 247 GiB storage and 7.66 GiB memory.

After I'm done experimenting and keep the 2 to 3 operative systems I like, should I wipe the notebook, create the 2 to 3 partitions I'm going to need and reinstall? Or would it be better to simply delete the partitions I don't want?

ubuntu xfce 23.10, macchanger and ip (cli applications from the repo)

I usually disregard the gui, because it sometimes shows the mac address as changed, but after testing with the cli, it turns out it hasn't been changed.

2 commands I cannot get to work:

sudo ip link set dev network down

does nothing, I'm not even asked to write my password.

Baffled, because on an older ubuntu, this same command works.

sudo macchanger -r network

returns: [ERROR]: Could not change MAC!: interface up or insufficient permissions: Operation not supported

I, however, turned the network down with the gui

what am I doing wrong?

I downloaded the lastest available fedora xfce from https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/live-respins/ to a 2014 macbook pro I'm using to test distros. Neither the live usb nor the installed OS recognize any interfaces where I am. However, ubuntu 23.10, linux mint 19 and macOS 14 all recognize available networks.

why? and can it be fixed?

would you write what flavor you use?
