The wings or not come down to how you read the passage. I think the overriding opinion is that the creature was surrounded by fire and smoke which had the appearance of great wings.

You're trying to measure the effect of something that affected your measurement system.
I'm very aware that the EU doesn't encompass all countries in Europe, but when reading a story where they ascribe a action to the continent I read the word Europe as a synonym for EU. It's fairly common, especially in an American magazine.
A pedantic point. Europe has become a synonym for EU in journalism.

My beef tends to be with software out of FANGs. Big teams and huge codebase to match. Completely inpetetrable for the rest of us and, I suspect, far more code then there should be.
