Critic Reviews

But Why Tho? - Matt Sowinski - 9 / 10

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles is an incredible package that brings back a classic to new audiences in stellar fashion.

CGMagazine - Chris De Hoog - 10 / 10

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is a deftly rebuilt iteration of a foundational title-making a must-play RPG easier than ever to enjoy.

COGconnected - Stephan Adamus - 90 / 100

Quote not yet available

Cat with Monocle - Seth Hay - 5 / 5

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is the most polished form of the original and is more than worth revisiting for its enhanced upgrades. The most difficult aspect of the game is tearing yourself away from it. Welcome back to Ivalice.

Cinelinx - Jordan Maison - 4.5 / 5

At the end of the day, The Ivalice Chronicles does what any great remaster should do: make an already great game even better. It modernizes the gameplay to make it more accessible for newcomers, while retaining the depth and strategy that long time fans will love/expect.

Console Creatures - Bobby Pashalidis - 10 / 10

Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles is remarkable in all aspects. From its inherently timely story to its standout characters and reworked script, this is a special game.

Evilgamerz - Christiaan Ribbens - Dutch - 8.8 / 10

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is a beautiful reimagining of a tactical classic. For nostalgic fans, there's the original version, but the Enhanced Edition is the one you'll want to play. With improved visuals, voice acting, and modern extras, there's no excuse not to try this classic. The downsides are minor (ultrawide doesn't work and sometimes a character disappears behind a rock). But they're offset by a mature story, a deep tactical system, and an epic gameplay experience that can keep you entertained for weeks. And as someone discovering the game for the first time, I can say that with this reissue, Square Enix has not only satisfied fans but also a new generation of players.

Final Weapon - Noah Hunter - 4.5 / 5

Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles is a heartfelt and commendable effort that brings forth one of Square Enix's most beloved games to modern platforms. Special attention to recreating the original experience has paid off, with fantastic quality-of-life features added alongside a refreshing UI. While I wish an orchestrated soundtrack were included in this release, this is easily the best way to experience Final Fantasy Tactics.

Forbes - Ollie Barder - 9 / 10

Overall, Final Fantasy Tactics is still the brilliant tactical role-playing game I thoroughly enjoyed playing at the end of the ‘90s. This new and updated HD remaster in the form of The Ivalice Chronicles is a welcome addition, especially for newer players, but it’s the original game that makes this collection so very special.

GameSpot - Steve Watts - 9 / 10

The Ivalice Chronicles provides the best way to play an all-time classic, even if it lacks some of the archival glow-up it deserves.

Gameliner - Philip Zeldenthuis - Dutch - 4.5 / 5

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles delivers its gripping tale of intrigue, politics, betrayal, loss, and friendship with full Japanese and English voice acting, enhanced HD visuals (though not in 2.5D pixel art), quality-of-life upgrades, a deep yet demanding Job System, generally challenging battles with especially punishing final bosses, and the option to play the original version—though it’s unfortunate that not all available content was included for greater replay value.

Gamers Heroes - Blaine Smith - 90 / 100

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles stands the test of time as one of the best tactics games the genre has ever seen. Its voiced content adds a modern layer to an already incredible story, and although its combat system hasn't changed much, it's just as good today as it was nearly 30 years ago.

IGN Italy - Alessandra Borgonovo - Italian - 8.5 / 10

A revision that's more of an excellent work of preservation, aimed at maintaining all the quality of the original and filing away only the roughest edges.

IGN Spain - Alejandro Morillas - Spanish - 7 / 10

In summary, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles largely succeeds in what it sets out to do. Not only does it coherently update its technical aspects, but it also adds necessary quality-of-life improvements; furthermore, its story and gameplay remain highly enjoyable today. Unfortunately, the lack of a Spanish translation makes it a completely inaccessible experience for a large part of the public.

Loot Level Chill - Lyle Pendle - 8.5 / 10

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles brings the granddaddy of tactics to a whole new audience, and it's still bloody brilliant.

MonsterVine - Nick Mangiaracina - 4 / 5

I think anyone with a passing interest in RPGs or tactical gameplay should play Final Fantasy Tactics at some point in their lives. The Ivalice Chronicles remains a strong addition to the Tactics lineup, despite a few missteps and strange development choices.

NintendoWorldReport - Jordan Rudek - 9.5 / 10

The job class system remains a standout, and the plot–as heavy as it is–stands as one for the ages. There is no better time to hop on a Chocobo, and delve into an RPG of and for history. One of the most replayable Square Enix games has never been more worthy of the title.

Noisy Pixel - Bailey Seemangal - 9 / 10

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles delivers a rich, emotionally resonant narrative and refined tactical gameplay that welcomes newcomers while honoring its legacy, though it stumbles in offering a definitive version for longtime fans.

Push Square - Khayl Adam - 9 / 10

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is so close to being the definitive way to play what remains a masterful game to this day. Square Enix's unfortunate decision to axe content introduced in The War of the Lions stings, but if you can get past that, the raft of quality-of-life improvements, additions, and upgrades make it a fantastic way to revisit, or experience for the first time, one of the most influential video games ever made.

RPGamer - Jordan McClain - 4 / 5

The gameplay is a bit rough around the edges, particularly in difficulty and class balancing, but everything holds up remarkably well. More importantly, the story and themes of Final Fantasy Tactics have aged like fine wine, and the voice acting does wonders at fully fleshing out and finally bringing this classic tale to modern audiences.

Shacknews - Lucas White - 8 / 10

Maybe, maybe not. But Final Fantasy Tactics is brilliant anyway, I reckon.

SteamDeckHQ - Nick Hanchet - 4.5 / 5

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles is a rare re-release that understands exactly why the original is revered, and carefully builds upon that legacy without suffocating the original's clear vision. The additions, be it a smoother UI, flexible difficulty modes, or the welcome sheen of voice acting, serve to make the game more approachable while still respecting the uncompromising heart that made it truly iconic. A rugged, respectful restoration ensures one of Square Enix’s most celebrated tactical RPGs can stand proudly in the modern era, and I can only hope that a revival of such a cult classic is a sign of what the future may hold for us. Whether you’re a newcomer like me or a battle-hardened Ivalician veteran, this is the definitive way to experience a classic that has managed to stand the test of time.

It's also essentially flawless on the Steam Deck, feeling perfect to play on the go, whether you choose the remastered or classic version of the game. This is a fantastic purchase, and one we can wholly recommend.

TechRaptor - Tanushri Shah - 8 / 10

Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles reaffirms the timeless strength of the classic. It serves as a fantastic gateway for newcomers, but may leave returning fans might be left wanting more.

The Outerhaven Productions - Scott Adams - 4.5 / 5

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles proves that the original game is still a strong video game. Adding voice acting makes it almost a whole different experience.

TheSixthAxis - Nic Bunce - 8 / 10

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles faithfully and lovingly remasters this deep and complicated classic for modern console. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it, and it has been amazing sinking back into the world of Ivalice. If you can get past some of the retro gaming pitfalls above, you will see a game that absolutely loves the franchise it's in, with nods to Final Fantasy lore scattered throughout. If you're a fan of either Final Fantasy or Tactical RPGs, we strongly recommend you pick this up.

WellPlayed - Nathan Hennessy - 7.5 / 10

A tough-as-nails tactical RPG that will have you emotionally invested like few others in the genre, this well-voiced and sharpened remaster puts Final Fantasy's grandest mediaeval political tale in its deserved spotlight.

Worth Playing - Chris "Atom" DeAngelus - 9 / 10

Overall, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is perhaps the best version of an already amazing game. All of its strengths are front and center, and any flaws were present in the original game, even if they're amplified in some cases. Even if you dislike the changes, the classic version is still makes it still an excellent way to experience the game, assuming you don't miss the War of the Lions bonus features. Final Fantasy Tactics remains a classic and a must-play for any fans of strategy RPGs or the Final Fantasy franchise.

XboxEra - MrHipshot - 9 / 10

The story for FF Tactics remained entertaining throughout. As a first-time player, it zigged when I thought it would zag and I will always appreciate when stories in RPGs like this can feel somewhat grounded with a focus on politics, inter-personal relationships and plenty of time for the characters to sit and reflect on the events in-game. Yes, there are still plenty of crystals, magic and other FF staples but Tactics feels like a cut above most other JRPG stories and is now one of my favorites in the Final Fantasy series.

Hello everybody,

I want to ask for some opinions on my current setup and how I pretend to use it for my Media Server:

Current Layout

I currently use an UGREEN DXP2800 NAS running TrueNAS Scale with two 4 TB HDDs in Mirror mode. This is planned to be my "long-term storage" for backups, photos, and so on.

Additionally, I have 1 TB SSD installed in the system. I created two datasets on it: one for Docker containers and the other one for Media, following the TRaSH guides folder layout

My current plan:

My idea is to use the SSD for the torrents and the seeds, and once the file (e.g. the ~~movie ~~ Linux ISO Image) is completed, to move it to the HDDs. From there, Jellyfin would read the corresponding dataset and play the media.

The question:

The TRaSH guides puts a lot of emphasis on hardlinks and atomic moves, and that forces you to operate in one single filesystem. Is it worth it to stick to the TRaSH guide or my current setup would work just fine? What do y'all think?

Thanks in advance and happy self-hosting!

Companies approached by the eSafety commissioner this month about the requirement to prevent under 16s from holding social media accounts from 10 December have conducted a self-assessment that the commissioner will use to decide if they need to comply with the ban.

eSafety will not be formally declaring which service meets the criteria but companies that eSafety believes meet the criteria will be expected to comply.

The United Nations believes it has solved the mystery of why an escalator abruptly stopped shortly after Donald Trump stepped onto it on Tuesday - his videographer may have accidentally triggered a safety mechanism.

U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said a readout of the escalator's central processing unit indicated it "had stopped after a built-in safety mechanism on the comb step was triggered at the top of the escalator."

He said Trump's videographer had been traveling backwards up the escalator to capture his arrival with First Lady Melania Trump.

US politics has been pretty fascist lately. The state is filling up concentration camps, engaging in mass state violence against people on the basis of racialized traits, deporting them to random countries without any respect for habeas corpus, exerting state pressure on the free press to censor speech critical of the current administration, and Trump is openly floating the idea of an unconstitutional third term.

Fascism is clearly on the rise, and they’re winning more and more power. None of this is far removed from us in the FOSS community – there are a number of fascists working in FOSS, same as the rest of society. I don’t call them fascists baselessly – someone who speaks out in support of and expresses solidarity with fascists, or who uses fascists dog-whistles or promotes fascist ideology and talking points, or boosts fascist conspiracy theories – well, they’re a fascist.

If one consistently speaks in support of a certain political position and against the opponents of that position then it is correct to identify them with this political position. Facts, as it were, don’t care about feelings, namely the feelings that get hurt when someone is called a fascist. Fascists naturally do not want to be identified as such and will reject the label, but we shouldn’t take their word for it. People should be much more afraid of being called out as fascist than they are afraid of calling someone a fascist. If someone doesn’t want to be called a fascist, they shouldn’t act like one.

It’s in this disturbing political context that I saw an odd post from the Cloudflare blog pop up in my circles this week: Supporting the future of the open web: Cloudflare is sponsoring Ladybird and Omarchy. Based on Ladybird’s sponsorship terms we can assume that these projects received on the order of $100,000 USD from Cloudflare. I find this odd for a few reasons, in particular because one thing that I know these two projects have in common is that they are both run by fascists.

Even at face value this is an unusual pair of projects to fund. I’m all for FOSS projects getting funded, of course, and I won’t complain about a project’s funding on the solitary basis that it’s an odd choice. I will point out that these are odd choices, though, especially Omarchy...

Does anyone know if/how I can delay, hide or otherwise adjust the notification which tells me that an application is not responding?

I'm batch processing a large number of images which takes a long time and my system is mistaking this for the program not responding. I also get this sometimes when performing a very heavy operation in GIMP, like selecting the foreground in a huge image.

Debian 13, GNOME 48

During some work with Tess, I'd notice that my test instance was running horribly slow. The CPU was spiking, Postgres was not happy and using pretty much all the available compute.

Investigating, I found the culprit to be some crawler or possibly malicious actor sending a massive number of unscoped requests to /api/v3/comment/list. What I mean by "unscoped" is without limiting it to a post ID. I'm not sure if this is a bug in Lemmy or there's a legit use for just fetching only comments outside of a post, but I digress as that's another discussion.

After disallowing unscoped requests to the comment list endpoint (see mitigation further down), no more issue.

The kicker seemed to be that this bot / jackass was searching by "Old" and was requesting thousands of pages deep.

Requests looked like this: GET /api/v3/comment/list?limit=50&sort=Old&page=16413

Since I shutdown Dubvee officially, I'm not keeping logs as long as I used to, but I saw other page numbers in the access log, but they were all above 10,000. From the logs I have available, the requests seem to be coming from these 3 IP addresses, but I have insufficient data to confirm this is all of them (probably isn't).

  • 134.19.178.167
  • 213.152.162.5
  • 134.19.179.211

Log Excerpt

Note that I log the query string as well as the URI. I've run a custom Nginx setup for so long, I actually don't recall if the query string is logged by default or not. If you're not logging the query string, you can still look for the 3 (known) IPs above making requests to /api/v3/comment/list and see if entries similar to these show up.

Mitigation:

First, I blocked the IPs making these requests, but they would come back from a different one. Finally, I implemented a more robust solution.

My final mitigation was to simply reject requests to /api/v3/comment/list that did not have a post ID in the query parameters. I did this by creating a dedicated location block in Nginx that is an exact match for /api/v3/comment/list and doing the checks there.

I could probably add another check to see if the page number is beyond a reasonable number, but since I'm not sure what, if any, clients utilize this, I'm content just blocking unscoped comment list requests entirely. If you have more info / better suggestion, leave it in the comments.

location = /api/v3/comment/list {

  # You'll need the standard proxy_pass headers such as Host, etc. I load those from an include file.
  include conf.d/includes/http/server/location/proxy.conf;

  # Create a variable to hold a 0/1 state
  set $has_post_id 0;

  # If the URL query string contains 'post_id' set the variable to 1
  if ($arg_post_id) {
    set $has_post_id  1;
  }

  # If the variable is not 1 (i.e. does not have post_id in the arguments), return 444
  # 444 is an Nginx-specific return code that immediately closes the connection
  # and wastes no further resources on the request
  if ($has_post_id != 1) {
    return 444;
  }

  # Otherwise, proxy pass to the API as normal
  # (replace this with whatever your upstream name is for the Lemmy API
  proxy_pass "http://lemmy-be/";
}

Today's screenshot is some more Final Fantasy 7 Remake. I did 2 chapters today (that's how you know it's a special occasion) and finally caught up to where i did when i first borrowed this game from my public library.

I went ahead and gave Barret Cactuar as a summoning Materia. I had the Carbuncle on Cloud originally and just didn't think i could equip a second one, turns out i could though. I gave it to Barret because with his whole earth thing it seemed appropriate. I absolutely love this little guy. I want one on my desk. And he's saved a battle quite a few times since introducing him.

On the subject of Barret, i love having him along for the party too. I like his personality. They make you think he's going to be this big tough guy, and then he's just a big ol' dorkus. I especially like when he does his own version of the Battle Complete theme.

Moving back a bit, When i was on the Catwalk over Sector 5, it really gave me major Wet Dry world vibes. I think it's because the ground down there looks like one solid flat texture, or at least that's my assumption.

Anyways, after cloud got tossed down there was when i stopped. That was 2 chapters worth of content and it was getting late, so i can pick it up some more tomorrow hopefully.

I've tried 2 different Windows cracks I found -- the FileCR 2023b crack, and the AppDoze 2025a crack. Both look legit to me but in both cases I get the exact same issue: With my computer offline, following the readmes, I mount the iso, run setup.exe, select "I have a File Installation Key", enter said key, and get this error: "Unable to load product files. Product files must be in the same folder as the input file. For help getting the product files, see the installation documentation on MATLAB Answer" which links to https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/98390?s_tid=pi_noprode_mpi_R2025a_win64 which is clear as mud.

I tried 0ing out the key and confirmed that it recognizes when you give it a bad key, so the key in the crack is still detected as a valid key, that's probably not the issue.

Thank you to any fellow pirate who can help a poor cuttlefish out o7 <3

EDIT: Based on https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/259632-how-can-i-get-matlab-installation-files-for-use-on-an-offline-machine

I should be able to use the installer (once logged in) to download files without installing, then go offline and use the file installation key. However, the option to download files without installing is all greyed out.

Hello, I’ve recently discovered self hosting and I really want to get into it. I’m not going to fully deep dive now, but I at least want to know the basics before I start my own journey. So today I came to ask if anybody has a roadmap or recommends a path for me to get into self hosting.

As far as Linux goes, I’m currently on Mint but only know how to update and switch/list directories. I do not know docker but understand the basics of it. This also goes for tailscale.

I know what a NAS is and how it works and the different Raids and when to use which one. I know what I want to self host but I am not sure if I want to use docker or proxmox. I’m also don’t understand the proxmox and how it works. Any information or tutorial would be highly appreciated. Thanks you

So, starting now, Google started mandating full JS for YT, effectively breaking all third-party clients and locking the site to their official client.

This reeks of DRM.

UPDATE: Installing Deno and installing yt-dlp through PyPi fixes yt-dlp but the very idea that Google is mandating JS to lock down YT in an attempt at pseudo-DRM is still crappy.

UPDATE #2: inv.nadeko.net is working again for now.
