So I own over 500 vhs tapes. And dvds, but those are easy to rip. I am trying to archive all my tapes before they go bad. However, that takes a lot of time. Should I just try to find all the movies I can for tapes I own?

I've been out of the game for a few years now. How vast are the resources for 90s movies and such ?

First of all, I'd like to apologize for contributing to the constant stream/flow of posts in which the main theme/idea/motive is to find a suitable distro for the OPoster. I wish we'd have a dedicated community that's active/large to the extent we'd be able to delegate/contain these convos to their designated places, but alas...

With that out of the way, we can get to the actual meat. So, for two weeks, I've been reading a ton about different distros. And while I'm still primarily overwhelmed by the amount of choice, I think I've finally got somewhat of an idea.

Requirements:

  • Software-wise, the only thing I'm worried about is Davinci Resolve. It should work, but it seems to be hit or miss. The distro I wish to use should handle this gracefully.
  • I'm a huge snob for security and privacy. As I'm kinda worried that desktop Linux' security isn't on par with M$ or macOS, I wish to use as secure of a system as possible to (somewhat) compensate for that.

I like to follow 'authorities' whenever I'm overwhelmed. As I've known them since their PrivacyTools-days, it was easy for me to designate Privacy Guides as such. Hence, I've come to appreciate its recommendations. But, I believe the tailor-made consensus by this communities' experts is at least equally important.

That's where I'm coming from, let's head over to the questions:

  • Are PrivacyGuides' recommendations actually good in the first place?

  • From what I can tell, the subset of security-focused distros are (at least potentially) my end-game. But, from what I could gather, they're not sensible picks for a newb. Is this correct?

  • As for what remains, I got the following assumptions (please correct me if I'm wrong*):

    • The anonymity-focused distros don't seem well-suited for general use.
    • Hardening Arch or NixOS to the extent we find within the offerings of Fedora or openSUSE isn't trivial.
    • Fedora's Atomic Desktops offer something tangibly superior security-wise over what we find for traditional Fedora and openSUSE at the expense of convenience.

As such, am I correct to assume that Fedora Atomic Desktops are best for me? Would you happen to know if it plays nicely with Davinci Resolve?

  • Are there any other distros worth mentioning within the context? If so, which ones and why?

  • Any gotchas or otherwise I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance for your input!

My mother has never daily driven a laptop more recent than a nearly decade old macbook running macOS Sierra. (except, briefly, a quite nice work-provided windows laptop that she hated using.)

She is, however, about to buy a 2025 Lenovo Yoga 7 14", and wants to use linux on it.

As the designated "techy person" in my family, I have been tasked with choosing which distro to put on it. I chose fedora it supports modern hardware nicely, and it's what I use, which would make tech support easier.

What I'm not sure about is what desktop environment she should use. I'm currently split between GNOME and KDE, since they're the two that are the most polished and work the best on the kind of hardware she'll be using.

She seems to prefer a more traditional desktop paradigm (dislikes overly flattened ui's and autohiding ui elements like scrollbars), but given she's not very techy and currently uses an iphone and ipad quite a bit, so gnome might feel more friendly with how simple it is, and be a bit more touch-friendly.

I asked her and she's not sure either, so I'm asking here which one is might be better given the hardware and the preferences she's expressed.

Last week, Marathon Fusion, a San Francisco-based energy startup, submitted a preprint detailing an action plan for synthesizing gold particles via nuclear transmutation—essentially the process of turning one element into another by tweaking its nucleus. The paper, which has yet to undergo peer review, argues that the proposed system would offer a new revenue stream from all the new gold being produced, in addition to other economic and technological benefits.

Some notes based on frequent comments:

  • Not my petition, I'm just sharing it.
  • I don't live in the USA.
  • You can sign a petition and call them to complain. The numbers are downthread.

Will be delisted from PC (via Steam), PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. I cannot find if this effects GOG. I would assume so.

parallel inventions in the 15th and 20th century:

  • books (printed through the printing press) spread knowledge just like the internet does, allowing a facilitated and drastically accelerated exchange of ideas
  • new transport methods allow new lands to be reached and new worlds to be explored. i wonder whether it is an accident that "spaceships" are called after ships

I'm in the midst of a migration to a new Linux distro and I'm stuck on restoring my qBittorrent setup from my previous install. Both environments are desktop versions of Linux - previously Bazzite, switching to Debian.

Prior to wiping the OS drive that had Bazzite on it, I had backed up my BT_data and config folders to a separate data drive. After installing Debian, I've copied my BT_data and config folders back to the right place on the new OS, however the issue I'm running into now is that when I open qBittorrent for the first time, all my torrents say Missing Files. This checks out seeing as the paths are slightly different, /run/media/oldusername/data instead of just /media/newusername/data. I started doing a force re-check on all my torrents and realized it'll take a very long time seeings as I have 6 TB of data to re-check.

I did a "find and replace" in all the config files to update the default save paths and the save paths for all my categories, but that wasn't enough.

Has anyone else gone through a qBittorrent migration and run into this problem? If so, how did you overcome it? Any other tips I should try?

I'm thinking of going back to Bazzite just to see if I can replicate the paths and get qBittorrent to recognize all my files again without having to re-check everything. I might also try setting up sym links to duplicate the original paths from the Bazzite install. I think these two approaches might be faster than re-checking my whole library. I am a tad concerned about getting hit with HnR's on some of my trackers since I've been offline for about 24 hours now. And I did not do a full backup of my previous OS (lmaoooo), so there's nowhere for me to go but forward. Thanks in advance for your help!

Nvidia is actively seeking land to build a massive multibillion-dollar tech campus in Israel’s north, which is expected to provide thousands of jobs in what promises to be a major expansion of the US chip giant’s operations in the country.

The computing juggernaut announced on Sunday that it had issued a so-called request for information (RFI) tender to locate a plot of land spanning 70 to 120 dunams (30 acres) with construction rights to build a campus of 80,000–180,000 square meters. Nvidia is interested in buying land with “high accessibility to main traffic arteries and public transportation” around Zichron Yaakov, Haifa, and the Jezreel Valley areas. The tech titan has hired real estate consulting firm Colliers for the search and has set July 23 as the deadline for submissions.

I would love to gain the idea that's possible what are the downsides and upsides. Based on that philosophy Nvidia is impossible right now.
