Hasn't Kia turned their reputation around in the past decade or so? I feel like them and Hyundai used to be the butt of every shitty car joke, but they're not that bad these days from what I understand.

Kia/Hyundai make some good cars and some shit cars. If you get one of the shit cars you are on your own.

The Kia Boys mess was caused by Kia trying to safe a few bucks by not putting immobilizers in some cars to save a few bucks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kia_Challenge

Kia/Hyundai also sold lots of cars the had their engines die due to manufacturing defects. They recalled some cars with the engine and not others. There was at least one class action settlement.

My wife bought 2016 Kia Soul new from the dealer. It was the highest trim level so it had an immobilizer but it had one of their troubled engines. When the engine threw a rod (that is bad) the engine was still under warranty at 60k miles only because she bought the car new. I was at the dealer and overheard another person with the Soul and a bad engine. He was out of luck because the car had over 50k miles and he was not the original owner. The Kia drivetrain warranty was good up to 100k if you were the original owner but only 50k if you were not.
