Yeah, I never got into MMOs (probably because WoW got big before I had a disposable income lol), so RTS was also my scene back then. I dabbled in SC, and played WC2 at a friend's house, but WC3 is where I really cut my teeth.

That game was so much goddamn fun to play online (dial-up, don't pick up the phone mom!). I remember getting caught every now and then in some kind of surprise rush that I had never seen, so I'd save the replay of the game and watch back to see how they did it, and then try it out against other people... I think I learned some kind of wyvyrn rush with Night Elves that way, if I recall correctly. Shit was tight. My memory is shit, I can't believe I can recall that. There were so many crazy strategies I picked up that way.

That was the golden age of RTS gaming. For me at least. Good times.

This is true. But things aren't black and white, there are degrees. For example, there is a big difference between private corporations, and publicly listed ones. The former at least allows for possible decency. Sometimes. Usually not.

I can even understand not getting into WC3.

I cannot. Could be nostalgia talking, but WC3 was the pinnacle of the PC RTS gaming era imo. WC3 and AOE2.

It only really makes sense when the remaster is trash (like GTA I guess). Otherwise, all I can see it doing is increasing sales of both the original and the remaster...

Maybe it's your hardware? I recently got a Framework laptop, and Bazzite has a distro image tailored specifically for the hardware, and I think that makes a big difference.

But even still, I ran Arch (well EndeavourOS) on my old Laptop, and it ran the games that the specs could run...

When you launch a game for the first time are you letting it go for a bit (sometimes a minute or two even) while it seems like nothing is happening? This is just for the initial launch, but in my experience, it can seem like it's not working but if you just let it go it will load. Then every time after that it's right away.

Also, check your Steam settings re: compiling shaders and uncheck the setting to have them compile while playing. This will compile the shaders before the game launches (a pop-up will show you the % complete), and it prevents stuttering.

Other than that, all I can think is hardware... Or maybe you're just super unlucky at picking games. I do always check ProtonDB first, so that could be why I've had nothing but good experiences.

I have beamng, but the one that plays like Wipeout, and I believe that one works. Though I think I've only tried it on my Steam Deck and not on Bazzite. Also, I understand it's a different game.

Edit: Yeah, looking at protondb it looks like Space Engineers is one people have some issue with. Sometimes you can get it to work using solutions on there, but I guess every now and then you don't. Hasn't happened to me yet.

Often times, games that have a native Linux runtime will still play better using proton and the Windows version. So try that with cs2. Only source game I've played is HL2 (recently) and i think I might have had to switch to Proton for it to run well, but I forget.

There isn't really anything wrong to do... The first time you load up a game, it might take a little bit longer, so you might have to let it sit for a minute while Steam says "exit" instead of "play game" (meaning the button you click in Steam to start the game). That's only the first load, after that, it should load right up.

You might also want to look at you settings for loading shaders (steam settings). I prefer to compile shaders before the game starts so as to avoid stuttering in the first few min, but it can also make it so it takes an additional 30 sec or so to open the game.

Another suggestion I'd have is to get proton-GE. Basically it's some dude's custom proton release that usually has better compatibility and often works better than official (if you want to avoid having to download a separate program, try "proton experimental" in your Steam compatibility options).

But getting proton-GE is easy. You have to switch to desktop mode once and use Discover (app store basically) to download "protonupQT" (I believe, this is all from memory so it might be slightly off). You can run that app in desktop mode, or do what I do and go back to game mode and add it as a "non-Steam game". Now you can update proton-ge without having to go into desktop mode...

Anyway, I'm sure that seems like a lot but it's really not. Hope it helps.

Edit: I'm just realizing now that your didn't mean "Counter Strike," but rather "Cities Skylines". Yeah, can't speak to the performance there. Still worth trying Windows version with proton

All of them... Lol. Way too big of a back log.

But I just picked up Tape to Tape and it's super fun. Giving me vibes of old 16bit hockey games. What else.......

I finally got Neon White on PC. Got it way back when it came out on Switch and played a little, but really prefer mouse and keyboard for fps. Very fun game.

Lorn's Lure is another one I've been playing a lot. Amazing game, nothing quite like it.

Was enjoying UFO50, but haven't picked it up in a couple weeks. Gonna go back to it.

What about you

Honestly... I would say that the game fits with the theme of the original post, and explaining it would ruin the magic.

I will say that not only do the mechanics change based on the story, but there is an entire asynchronous online system where users help other users (that they will never see or meet in game) to construct be infrastructure to make travel for others (they will never see or meet) easier.

Then those mechanics feed back into the actual story. It's kind of wild.

I know it's a divisive game, but I will say it's a masterpiece imo. Even if only for those mechanics.

And yes, the controls change based on how the load you're carrying is balanced. I believe the definitive way to play is the Definitive Edition on PS5 with the DualSense controller since the adaptive triggers become harder to press as your load increases.

Right, but we know how people are (look at torrenting, piracy, drm, etc.), and people would figure out ways to gamify it no matter what, I believe. But you are correct that they don't seem to necessarily have any interest in stopping it. Because of course not, it's all about the bottom line.

Oh no, are they really going to use AI to translate a Falcom RPG? That's fucking heresy. The scripts in those games, are one of the things that set them apart from other JRPG schlock...

spoilerThe persistent/recurring NPCs having their own little side stories that you can miss or skip entirely if you don't talk to literally every NPC twice every single day (I haven't played a ton of Trails in the Sky series yet, was going to wait for the remake, but now I'm not sure.... This take is based on Cold Steel and Zero/Azure), is one of the most charming aspects of these games imo... Each NPC has their own individual personality, and it remains consistent (or sometimes even changes through character growth. In the background and completely missable if you don't exhaust all of their dialogue. Just off the top of my head, I'm thinking of Mint from Cold Steel I & II. What a little rascal! And her interactions with her uncle, Professor Makarov. Then Makarov's budding romance with that other teacher after Mint sets them up... Lol, I remember this shit more than some of the main plot.

I love that shit!

And, typically, it seems as though they put a lot of care into the localization. This is super disappointing if true.

I get that these scripts must be massive but I'd rather wait an extra 6 months or whatever, if it means the NPC dialogue doesn't read like ChatGPT.

Edit: I realized that this thread is all about going in blind, and my comment could be construed as ruining that. I despise spoilers of any kind (and my brain seems to seek them out so as to troll me), so I'm very sensitive to that. Apologies.

Death Stranding would like a word...

I've recently been eyeing the case for that game on the shelf and thinking about going back to it, but it's been so long since I last played that I 100% would need to start over again. I had gotten prob 20+ hours so it's a lot to lose. But I remember the story being pretty mindbending, and there being some interesting mechanics.
