Reminder you can use apps like spotube to stream music for free without giving Spotify a cent.
You can also use those savings to go to local shows, although going to one show a year is likely giving more to artists than streaming will.
Where did you get this screenshot from? I wanna see how much a platform would have paid my artists
I got this from spotube it has a stats tab.
Oh, okay. Is spottube working well for you? I've always had trouble with it so now I'm on OpenTune which works wonderfully. On spottube for example, it would take about 40 seconds for a song to start playing after I hit play.
It works for me know but every now and again it breaks and I need to mess with the plugins it's using.
That's nice. I just tried it again and unfortunately, still, it doesn't work. Now it doesn't load at all. Too bad as it looks like a really nice application
Not defending streaming platforms, but this completely ignores infra costs.
Last time I checked someone stole all their data and it was only 300TB.
Data is cheap. Even cheaper when its peer to peer.
Yes, data is cheap. Infra is not
You're talking to non -tech nerds about something that usually only tech nerds are familiar with.
Just like on Reddit you're going to get downvoted because people don't understand. Lemmy is effectively the same in that regard.
Just having data is cheap. Actually serving that data up in a meaningful way is expensive as fuck.
Thanks for writing the words down! I struggle with that sometimes.
When its just serving and gating access to flac files, it really isn't that complicated of an application, and serving content is a known quantity with cheap tooling.
Just don't use vercel, bro.
Cool!
Why would include infra costs when I'm not using Spotify to play the music?
I'm confused. Are you playing your local music?
IIRC, Spotube streams its music from YouTube.
