How to immediately get your access revoked.

Just don't go doing something super boneheaded like trying to hard-code swear word filters or- oh wait the devs already did that (or tried to, anyway) and told users they were racist for not wanting an arbitrary filter because daddy knows best.

[–] dullbananas@lemmy.ca 46 points 7 months ago (2 children)

I regret to inform you that I already did something boneheaded

You were the chosen one! You were supposed to save lemmy, not destroy it!!!!

nah, you at least admit your mistake, that is how we learn the right way. happens a lot in open source code. don't be hard on yourself, just review the fixes and make sure you understand what went wrong. :)
you're making useful contributions, that's more than a lot of teens (and most adults) are doing these days.

Don't sweat it man. I've seen null pointer dereferencing cause drones to fall out of the sky so this is not that bad. One time I did a code change that disabled an e-stop feature that stopped the propellers from spinning. Thankfully no fingers were lost because of that! The code was reviewed and passed the software simulation tests at the time. It just got missed.

I'm a teen, and I don't even know how to git. I'm learning, tho school does everything in it's power to stop me.

Do it.

All the cool kids learn things outside of school.

[–] Funkytom467@lemmy.world 25 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Especially for anything tech related, don't wait for a school to teach you, you'll have way more fun and learn so much more by yourself.

At least until college, then it depends...

[–] UnRelatedBurner@sh.itjust.works 8 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Thanks, for the motivation. But I ment it like I don't have time because of school. I have exams due in a week and I have to study 10+ topics in grammar, literature and history. For a week I'm like a zombie.

Wake up at noon, hate life, study bullshit, hate life w/ a numb brain, play some games caz I can't anymore, it's 4am so let's sleep.

I'd like a job for the summer, and I should be working on contacts, or something I can show to my employer, not on literature.

[–] Croquette@sh.itjust.works 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

In what grade are you? If you aren't college/university level, this is fucking bullshit

[–] UnRelatedBurner@sh.itjust.works 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I downloaded a pdf to search for the british equivalent. closest thing is further education, "work-based" college, but I'm not at the part-time-work part yet.

School system is so fucked can't even translate it. Best I could get out of online translators is "technical college". But the whole point is, that it's not a college, idk.

[–] Croquette@sh.itjust.works 2 points 7 months ago

I get what you are saying, we have something similar here. But even then, the workload was never as big as it was for college/university.

Good luck

[–] Funkytom467@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I get that, went through it myself and i've known plenty of people in that case.

What got me into programming is learning c++ to make games. I started the summer after high school when i didn't have any work left.

But my programming skills became useful for my job though. If it's not for you I get you would rather look for a job.

Good luck with your work my friend.

Thanks, my A plan is to get thru this hell. I'd only like a summer job. Still, I feel like I should be able to show something up. I started AoC 2023 back in december, day 13 bricked me, and I haven't gotten a 2nd wind yet, and time is running out.

If I can ask for advice.. I heard with leetcode (I'm not doing it, just heard) that if I don't know the solution for something in 30 minutes, I should look it up. Does this apply to AoC? As I remember spending 8 hours on these puzzles and feeling awesome when I finally came up with a solution that worked. But I've gave day 13 two afternoons and I still can't figure it out. I have ideas, but it'll take like a week to code and test all of them, chances are they won't even work. I know that two half days since december isn't very dedicated, but I don't know where tf did these 3 months go, I actually can't remember what happened in jan-feb lol.

[–] Funkytom467@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Well i've never really done AoC or test alike myself. So i don't know the difficulty or amount of time you should spend.

To me if you have ideas but just not elegant ones, you could always do them. Despite being wrong or ugly they'll still teach you something, especially if they're complex.

But if the idea gets too hard to do, to time consuming for your little time, or if you're really stuck, you can look at the solution.

Just remember that a solution isn't a great way to learn, at best it will teach you what you need to learn more about.

I once reverted all local changes when trying to learn branches. It's a dangerous game.

[–] maryjayjay@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

Never use --force or --hard and it's very difficult to use data that you have committed.

[–] flashgnash@lemm.ee 8 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Best way to learn at a surface level is randoms on the internet and Google imo

Bonus points if you get it wrong publicly because then everyone will jump on the chance to point out the things you do wrong

[–] KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml 38 points 7 months ago

Congrats

Now just work hard for a few years and then when nobody notices, add an m4 file that hijacks ssh

[–] words_number@programming.dev 34 points 7 months ago

That's actually good. You've probably got more free time to work on lemmy than most adults. Impressive that you apparently got the skills too, so congratz! Also for choosing to learn rust! :)

[–] Vigilante@lemmy.today 28 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Can someone fill me in on the joke ???

Edit : Nvm i worked it out meself crisis averted .

[–] scytale@lemm.ee 27 points 7 months ago (1 children)

New zero day drop incoming.

[–] tourist@lemmy.world 15 points 7 months ago

everyone is going to be able to see my saved posts and laugh at me this is awful

[–] nigga@lemmy.id 23 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

I once saw a programmer genius on github which was 17 years old. His username was some anime protagonist.

Consider how big the Lemmy codebase is and that Rust is not the easiest programming language and he gets an invite.

[–] steal_your_face@lemmy.ml 16 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Not sure if it’s a good idea to post an image with your email address in it

[–] dullbananas@lemmy.ca 28 points 7 months ago

It's already in my git commits and I want to say "REPENT" to scammers

[–] mypasswordis1234@lemmy.world 12 points 7 months ago

Now you can add some backdoors to it
