I've been too poor to relate to that.

[–] MossyFeathers@pawb.social 23 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's okay, tbh I don't think you're missing out. My experience is that they're usually badly maintained if they're maintained at all (last time I looked at a hotel pool it was green and growing algae). The "swimmable" hotel pools are only found at really, really nice hotels.

Why do they even bother installing pools in hotels if they're not going to maintain them? What a waste of space.

[–] De_Narm@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Well, I've been missing out on the whole travelling thing.

Ah, right. I forgot that going places just to see things was something people did.

POV: You're 12 years old and your family is on vacation at your extended family's homes

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 months ago

POV: You're 12 years old and your family is sleeping on the grass outside, because it's just too hot inside.

Not trying to one-up, just having a bit of fun

[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah lol never lived in a house big enough to have a hallway, let alone across multiple floors.

[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago

Never stayed in a hotel?

As a kid. Me either... I think the first time I stayed on a hotel was my 20s

[–] mctoasterson@reddthat.com 38 points 2 months ago

POV you are walking down the street when you clip through the sidewalk and find yourself in the Backrooms.

[–] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 36 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And it didn't matter because you didn't have the key card anyway.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 months ago

If you knock on the right door, your family lets you in.

Don't knock on the wrong door.

[–] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 2 months ago (1 children)

When you could afford to go on a fucking vacation

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Back then, you had enough pocket money for a plane ticket and a hotel room. Good times.

[–] blackwateropeth@lemmy.world 22 points 2 months ago (2 children)

+a lingering smell of cigarette smoke

[–] ZeffSyde@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

As a child of the 80s and former smoker, I actually find the lingering smell of cigarettes in a smoking room super comforting, to the point that if a hotel has a smoking room option I take it.

[–] Tlaloc_Temporal@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Wow, I can immediately see how that would be so much worse. Thank the gods that I was born after cigarettes started to be banned in public areas.

[–] blackwateropeth@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Yea, I was born in 90 so I didn’t even have it as bad as people born before that. In the 90s so many places let you smoke inside, so a ton of stuff smelled like musty old cigarettes lol.

[–] USNWoodwork@lemmy.world 21 points 2 months ago (2 children)

In my experience 12 year olds are pretty impervious to temperature fluctuations. Little bastards dive into freezing water like it’s nothing and run around in the scorching sun, not even noticing that they sweat through all their clothes.

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

When my toddler was much younger, they would take a bath in warm water, then get out in my well air conditioned house, shivering violently and happily declining any attempt to warm them up. We would always end up warming them up in the end, of course.

Nowadays they're a bit older and will seek out the biggest pile of blankets they can find at any opportunity.

[–] frezik@midwest.social 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Tell that to the 12 year old gymnastics competitors I ran into once outside a venue when it was 40 degrees out. They have a very low body fat percentage.

That's a sport that should probably die off, at least in anything like its current form, along with American Football.

[–] wafflez@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Why, due to saftey concerns?

[–] frezik@midwest.social 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Broadly, yes. They're 12 year olds being pushed into unsafe diet and exercise plans, often with very high pressure coming from parents and coaches. The Olympic committee was right to raise the minimum competition age over the last few decades, but this shit still happens.

[–] emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

being pushed into unsafe diet and exercise plans, often with very high pressure coming from parents and coaches

That's true of any sport? I agree that sports should be more fun and less competitive, at least for children, but why single out gymnastics? At least there's no contact like in wrestling or even football.

Too decorated and friendly for that.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 months ago

You call this decorated?? That picture is like an alien's interpretation of earth art with the LoD turned to minimum

[–] roofTophopper@lemmy.world 17 points 2 months ago

I can smell this area

[–] mr_satan@monyet.cc 13 points 2 months ago (4 children)

Bold of you to assume we had hotel money when I was 12

[–] jdeath@lemm.ee 6 points 2 months ago

POV: your family is rich enough for hotels and you’re 12

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 months ago

Thank you for making this comment. I was feeling a little twinge of loss at this apparently relatable moment that we never had.

[–] Rakonat@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Yeah this ain't relatable at all. The only time ever spent a night in a hotel with a family member was when my dad chaperoned a school trip.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

dunno about now but back in the day if you used the tracking card and dumped all your money into the casinos they would comp hotel rooms. I had many stays in vegas as a kid. There's some stuff for kids to do but there are definitely way better trips to go on. Vegas felt like I went back to my childhood home when I came back at drinking age. Enough stuff changed by the following trip that it has lessened though.

[–] INHALE_VEGETABLES@aussie.zone 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And you need to pee real bad right?

[–] greenhorn@lemm.ee 22 points 2 months ago

No... I was just in the pool...

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ah, a lesser known Pink Floyd song.

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

You mean this gives off a pink floyd vibe right?

This isn’t a reference to a really existing obscure song?

I am scared i have now lost my opportunity to shine with my obsession of obscure Pink Floyd tracks by not knowing what song you refer too.

[–] virku@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

If it is an actual reference it is either incredibly obscure or I have missed something and would like to know what it references.

Either way I know what to listen to the next couple of days.

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yep, some of their songs are quite narrative, often talk about their experience, and maybe Pink Floyd just lives rent free in some part of my head so I just randomly associated it.

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

I can absolutely hear the bottom text as if it was a lyric from wish you were here.

Got any rare favorites?

I find myself quite drawn to the alternate tracks from around the time of ummagama these days. Some versions of the narrow way part III being a particular favorite.

There is also a live album post dark side where they play songs that appear to be proto-animals but have the music of wish you were here.

A great addition to any collection i dont think its on Spotify.

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 1 points 2 months ago

Same! I miss the fact most albums told a story and all songs had some continuity.

[–] AndrasKrigare@beehaw.org 10 points 2 months ago

Thank you for actual POV

[–] Thcdenton@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

The ac was always ice cold in those halls. I miss it but I wont do hotel pools anymore.

Seems like Kane Pixels got some childhood trauma to cope with, must be why he did the backrooms videos.

[–] feedum_sneedson@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Damn I wish I had money.
