To answer the obvious question - I don't know whether this means it's not coming to Steam, Epic Games Store or other PC storefronts, but it sounds like it's a Microsoft-only joint for the minute.

Apparently the dude couldn't be bothered to check the steam store page:

Lmao nice. Hopefully it doesn't require Microsoft. Would love to play this on Steam Deck with my friends

[–] arudesalad@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago

Looks like your good. It doesn't say a Microsoft account is required like it does on other store pages like forza horizon's

(This may just be because the store page is incomplete)

[–] fossphi@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Would this run and be playable on a steam deck?

[–] yuri@pawb.social 2 points 1 month ago

i played through the whole of below zero on a deck and it ran swimmingly! i think it was before final release too, so probably not even fully optimized at that point.

[–] dditty@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

Idk the first one runs great

Hard to say for sure yet, but there is no reason to include any absurd anti-cheat and as long as they don't lose their fucking minds and decide to use some kind of insane drm, I reckon the answer is yes.

[–] deus@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

And just for the sake of completion, yes, it also has an Epic store page.

[–] datavoid@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 month ago

To be fair the steam page went up today

Below Zero scratched a bit of the Subnautica itch, but it didn't reach the same highs. Hopefully Subnautica 2 can somehow recapture some of the magic of the first one.

Pleeeease let the second game be alone with no other characters other than if you’re playing multiplayer. The writing in BZ was uhhhhhh okay. I gave Subnautica an 8/10 but BZ a 6/10. On the real scale, not the stupid-ass game review scale. 6/10 is a good game with flaws.

They've got Seth Dickinson as part of the writing team and literally everything I've read of his is fantastic, including game stuff and his novels and short stories, so I'm hopeful.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

That brings me hope!

BZ went from a solid 8 to a low 3 for me when they removed all emotional attachment you had after they decided they couldn't do anywhere with their story when it was in beta. The new story they filled it with I just couldn't get into.

But yea, they so need to have no other people for the immersion factor

My favorite thing about Subnautica was the awesome Cyclops sub you could literally build a base inside of. It made me crave more survival games where you have a mobile base like that and Below Zero really fell flat with their main sub you couldn't build in.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Totally, I was a bit disappointed that this wasn't straight needed. I think if they make a MUCH bigger map (and I think they could do that with just open ocean, the ocean is big) and have that mobile base take a much larger role. That would be dope as hell.

[–] AdNecrias@lemmy.pt 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The first one had one advantage the others will never have, it was brand new, everything was new. Any other that comes out you'll have expectations. It needs to be better to even match how good it felt to play for the first time.

[–] zante@lemmy.wtf 2 points 1 month ago

This. I hope people remember this.

It was a novel idea superbly executed. It will be difficult, if not impossible, to recreate the mystery.

[–] shani66@ani.social 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Eh, i think they don't really get why the first one was as good as it was. The loneliness was a key part of it imo.

[–] saboteur@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Totally agree. But the inclusion of multiplayer shows they are listening to feedback, as a large portion of the playerbase wanted to have that.

[–] RixMixed@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

A large portion of the player base wanted it because they advertised it as being a big feature of the first game and then walked back on it.

[–] masterspace@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No, I never even heard of that, I just built a cool base and then wanted to be able to show it to my friends

[–] RixMixed@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Really? The key art even had two divers on it during early access. I just remember being kinda bummed when they said it wasn’t happening. I don’t think they knew how their game would turn out at that point and it did turn out great in the end.

[–] masterspace@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

They explicitly call out that lonely solo play is still a focus.

[–] Dettweiler42@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 1 month ago (3 children)

The biggest spooky factor of Subnautica was being alone and surrounded by the unknown. I guess they aren't going for that this time.

Compared to the first, Below Zero was okay. I predict their third game is going to be "meh".

[–] masterspace@lemmy.ca 25 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The developers are careful to point out that if you're one of "those who prefer the eerily beautiful solitude of solo play, Subnautica 2 will still provide that familiar experience, and prove equally as challenging."

[–] Cornelius_Wangenheim@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

The problem is you can't go back to that well repeatedly. We've played the first two games. The unknown is pretty well known at this point. It's like monster horror movies: none of the sequels are any good unless they pull an Alien/Aliens and switch genre to action.

[–] shani66@ani.social 4 points 1 month ago

BZ really kinda doubled down on the worst aspect of the first game (the focus on the alien race) and killed the best part (the scared and alone vibe), that's not a good sign imo.

[–] Barzaria@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Subnautica is a horror game. I loved it.

[–] moon@lemmy.cafe 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I thought they said they were done with their Subnautica series for now? Either way, hell ya this sounds awesome. Just hope they have respawning materials if it has more focus on multiplayer.

[–] MarcomachtKuchen@feddit.org 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Their latest game Moonbreakers was not the financial succes the studio needed. Which is sad I love e the game for everything it is. Hopefully it didn't cost employers their jobs

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

unless they scrap all the below zero garbage I'm passing on it. I loved subnautica 1 but like they absolutely killed zero's story and if they do the same with sub 2 then I am not interested. Below zero just didn't have the subnautica feel to it.

[–] p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com -3 points 1 month ago

Did they fix all of the bugs? Subnautica 1 is still buggy as shit.
