This is called 'recuperation'. A classic form of coopting radical disruption back into the folds of the status quo. Think Napster > iTunes > Spotify as one example.

All centralized services. The fediverse is theoretically resistant to that kind of process.

Will stuff that they don't accept any old email address. Did they offer other major service providers (MS, Apple) of only Google?
