So boot floppies are right out?
Linux
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).
Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

And so are other derivatives. No cardoard either.
I mean I still use the iso attached to a virtual cd-rom to create virtual machines
Yeah but that's not limited to physical DVD size constraints.
It's probaly not needed at this point. You can get flash drives crazy cheap.
Any computer that meets the minimum requirements for Fedora will support booting from USB. The only reason left to boot from a DVD is if you need read only media for security purposes.
Or you know, MP3s on DVD for the car.
Do you boot Linux from your music player?
Sounds like a project to me!
Did you misread? They wrote "the only reason left to boot from a DVD", so the use case you replied with has nothing to do with the topic.
And it's getting harder to find decent optical drives. USB external ones are utter buttgarbage.
Damn it, on the very day my DVD burner arrived, right after the weekend when I switched to Fedora Atomic Sway. Oh this universe.
This doesn't mean Fedora will not boot from DVDs anymore, it means any optical media bug won't stop new Fedora release, any related bug will be squashed like any other regular bug after release
Thanks for the reply, I was mainly joking. The burner will be used for purposes other than burning Fedora images, but I found it funny how it all came together yesterday.
They say the best time to burn a DVD is 20 years ago. Next best time is today.
I think 20 years ago is about the last time I used a DVD
Well if they could get it to fit on a mini-dvd or a CD then nothing would be lost but I guess pre-UEFI systems are slowly going to be abandoned. (Guess coreboot community needs more funding)
My pre-UEFI system can boot from a USB drive.
Most still-functional ones can.
yeah, i think you'd have to make a lot of effort to find a pc newer than 20 years old that doesn't support usb booting
Here... I still have one :(
damn
and i thought my computer was obsolete. i bought it "new" 10 years ago, but i optimized for price, so it was already obsolete then. still, it supports usb booting
Don't forget that a lot of people still prefers legacy BIOS, even on modern system.
But most of those should support booting from USB devices.
