I need a USB stick about once every six months to update the map in my car and pretty much every time I need to buy a new one because even though the one I used the last time was stored in a drawer for six months, it doesn't work anymore when I need it a second time.

But why repurpose (which costs) failed microSD as cheap thumbdrive instead of selling them directly for cheap?
What is a strategy against it?
I bought an m.2 drive enclosure. It's bulky, but so damn fast. Plus it recycles old drives I've had lying around. Love it.
- bulky compared to standard flash drive, still quite portable
Link?
Not OP but get Orico, they make good stuff.
Whatever enclosure you get, verify that it doesn't have a jmicron chipset, they're garbage.
