The dye industry, heavy on the use of petrochemicals, is one of the world's biggest polluters. Now dyes can be made by microorganisms that -grow- colors.

I hope they’re not using dihydrogen monoxide for this. Literally anyone that consumes it dies.

Microbes are still made of chemicals, it's just different chemicals

I hate the “chemicals bad” nonsense. It’s ignorant fearmongering. Meanwhile I eat chemicals for breakfast.

I started working at a job that had a "Do Not Dump Chemicals Down Sink" sign. I asked it that included H2O, because I actually poured water down it. They didn't like my joke.

They run a lab. They should know better.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 4 points 19 hours ago

They also know that you know what they mean.

Nonetheless, be careful especially with cosmetica. They don't use lead and arsen anymore only because it is forbidden now. Carcinogen and hormonal active substances are not rare there.

“It’s 100% natural!” “So is arsenic.” …

When I see “without chemicals” I just assume it’s shorthand for “without known harmful chemicals, probably” until I carefully read the label and learn more

Asbestos is literally 100% natural. A pure natural product.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So are hemlock and belladonna.

The internet also does get "the dose makes the poison".

[–] lauha@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

It's mineral mined from the ground.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 11 points 1 day ago

My favorite: "With natural ingredients!"

[–] EvilBit@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

I take it as shorthand for “without known harmful chemicals, probably, also, we think you’re an idiot”.

[–] iopq@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

There are artificial colors that are not known to be harmful, so would that also mean they are without chemicals?

[–] Munkisquisher@lemmy.nz 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Geez, you've eaten so many chemicals, that's all you are made up of now

[–] Manjushri@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I for one have never eaten anything except chemicals!

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Everyone who eats and drinks chemicals will eventually die!

[–] EvilBit@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

I knew someone who ate a chemical once and they died so it must be true.

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oooo, quercetin, so spooky like myricetin and kaempferol. I can't even go outside for fear of the chemical cyanidin. Wait. Those are just banana flavour compounds. My bad.

So are you.

I'm excited to see the first color to cause a mass health event because the color wasn't fully sterilized because of cost cutting. I'm sure people will be really normal about it.

Bets on red btw.
