I'm not American but even I know you need to keep your dogs secured in a dog safe when you're not using them. It's just basic dog safety

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 75 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Guns don't kill people. Dogs with guns kill people.

[–] not_me@piefed.social 16 points 4 weeks ago (5 children)

Guns don't kill people . Bullets kill people

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 11 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Bullets don't kill people, homeostatic imbalance kills people.

He forgot to buy a second gun to stop his dog from using his first gun against him.

[–] slothrop@lemmy.ca 59 points 1 month ago

Where were all the good dog gun owners to defend the victim?

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 36 points 1 month ago (5 children)

The only thing that stops a good dog with a gun is a bad dog with a gun.

Or maybe a cat with a knife, I guess? I dunno.😸

[–] TheLowestStone@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It is the cat. The problem is then you need a mouse with a rusty needle to deal with the cat.

Owner shot from behind by their own shotgun due to negligent firearm storage. Dog didn't shoot shit.

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 12 points 4 weeks ago

Once they get a taste for blood, they never stop.

Prequel to the critically acclaimed 'Hobo with a Shotgun' we present to you: 'Dog with a Shotgun'.

Poor doggo 🥺

Guns are so loud.

[–] Devjavu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, and he will now miss his friend.

[–] ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social 10 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (3 children)

11 people that didn't read the article. Says he went into surgery. Not dead. Owner is still a dumbfuck who should have their gun privileges taken away.

Looking at the news I would guess American houses are buit mostly out of loaded firerarms coddled together by zipties. And oversized fridges.

[–] Infinite@lemmy.zip 28 points 4 weeks ago

Similar words: coddled is treated carefully, cobbled is poorly constructed.

[–] Bongles@lemmy.zip 13 points 4 weeks ago

And those fridges show ads now

He was cleaning his (loaded) gun... Sure...

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 28 points 1 month ago

Its actually a very common problem. Gun nuts all think they are John McClane and need to keep one in the chamber at all times. They remove the magazine but never properly run the action and yeah. Its especially a problem with glocks because disassembly actually involves squeezing the trigger.

Responsible gun owners are only slightly more common than good guys with a gun.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 month ago (6 children)

I've met some people who really should not have guns...

Those cases are failed suicide attempts or they were otherwise doing something they know damned well was stupid.

Any given weapon is stupid easy to clear, in 3-4 seconds, and be certain it's clear. Not like bullets are hiding in there somehow.

[–] kn33@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Agreed. There are a lot of people and a lot of guns in the world, so I won't say that it's never happened. The vast majority of those cases, though, are suicides or failed suicides where they're trying to save face and/or make sure the life insurance still pays out.

stuff like this makes a real strong case for taking guns away from everybody

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 37 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

I feel like if your dog shoots you thats your own damn fault.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 37 points 4 weeks ago (3 children)

Not in US. In US gun owners are never responsible for what happens with their guns. It can be the kid's fault, the dog's fault or even fault of the gun itself but it's never the gun owner's fault.

[–] crandlecan@mander.xyz 13 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

I bet it's Obama's fault!! 😤

Pretty dumb to keep a round chambered.

[–] phaedrus@piefed.world 18 points 4 weeks ago (4 children)

My father, an NRA ~~member~~ sucker that claims gun safety first, leaves a 12g fully loaded (buckshot) with one in the chamber and safety off in a soft bag with the zipper open right under him while he sleeps. He also has Parkinsons.

You're giving these people way too much credit by presuming they do any form of critical thinking.

Number one rule of weapons safety, treat every weapon as if it were NERF.

The victim told police that before the incident, he was cleaning his firearm

getting shot by own gun and cleaning it, these often come together, maybe is safer to keep them dirty

[–] orbitz@lemmy.ca 47 points 1 month ago

Somehow he was cleaning it and it still had rounds to fire or he cleaned and reloaded and left it unsecured so it had rounds to fire. Sounds like sort of person who should own a gun for sure.

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good boy with a gun

[–] Steve@communick.news 22 points 1 month ago (5 children)

I'm pretty sure I read about this exact scenario almost a decade ago.

[–] crandlecan@mander.xyz 19 points 1 month ago

Dogs are smart, they actually learn from history 👍

[–] JollyG@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It happens a lot. They even made a lifetime movie about one incident.

Why was a loaded gun on the bed? That seems like terrible firearm safety.

[–] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 14 points 4 weeks ago

Fun fact! 90% of gun owners treat firearms like this!

So this must be what the pigs are scared of when they're shooting people's dogs.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 11 points 4 weeks ago (5 children)

I mean, I like things that go boom as much as the next human. But how hard is it to; 1, not fucking literally sleep with the thing. And 2; leave it unloaded if you are‽

The shooting appears to be accidental, but police said they are still investigating the incident.

"On any occasion prior to this, had your dog exhibited hostility towards you, sir?"

[–] butwhyishischinabook@piefed.social 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah that makes sense, he was just cleaning his shotgun... with a shell in the chamber. That's definitely how that works.

Poorest excuse for a friend accidentally shooting you. "My dog ate my homework."

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 month ago

Guns don’t kill people, dogs kill people.

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 month ago

Awww, who's a good boy.
