What's the alternative closest to the completeness of Instander at the moment? I have been using the last version of Instander still supporting v7a which is v16.0 for many years now and as it seems there is a chance it will finally stop working soon.

As non insta user who's being forced to dip my toes in for the purpose of community organizing: what are these and how do I use them?

[–] sexy_peach@feddit.org 39 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Insta really is the worst platform to interact with when you don't have an account. Sometimes food places or music artists have insta only and rarely do I find what I need in these cases.

There are also nitter-like services for Instagram. I have a forwarder extension in my web browser set to redirect IG links to https://imginn.com/. I can’t say how advanced it is because my use case is opening memes from a single person.

shitflare >:(

I had no luck using it..Well, maybe it's good I remain off Instashit

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago

Oh that's not a good sign. Try https://kittygr.am/ instead

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Could you try a non private/age-gated account?

[–] ThunderLegend@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

Is this a thing? O have no idea..it's been years since I don't use instg ..I just searched my friend

I work the other way. If I need or want it, but it's on <insert (physically, mentally, financially, environmentally, or privacy-wise) harmful corporation here>, I don't need or want it. There's always an alternative elsewhere.

It's a web front-end, so if you host it somewhere, you can access it over your mobile browser. Maybe you can even host it on your phone via Termux, but I'm not sure.
I'd say for phones it's not ideal either way though.

Just out of curiosity: what should PixelFed have for you to change 100% from Instagram?

[–] SaltySalamander@fedia.io 55 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You can contribute to that.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Yeah weirdly enough even though i post more to Pix than to Insta, millions of users haven't switched. 🤷‍♂️

I'd contribute to the thirst traps to get everyone to come over but I don't think anyone wants to see a hairy overweight dude get nearly naked.

My favourite Band for example. They only use Instagram and Facebook. It's infuriating. I just log in via browser every few months.

[–] bufalo1973@piefed.social 9 points 1 month ago

The thing is that you don't need to close you FB/Insta/X/whatever account to open one in any Fediverse service, but they don't get that.

[–] DSN9@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Make a page for them, auto paste their content, then tell them they have a following on pixelfed, and hand them the account.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Yes, they'll be thrilled by the three followers. lmao

[–] DSN9@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

All networks start small. What happens upon seeding is we often find, increasingly interesting overlaps, someone, somewhere different, or someone different finds it. Because it's an open network, not a gate kept network, or at least more open. Over the long run, the fediverse will increase in population, and popularity, overtaking networks whose primary purpose is advertising and data collection. So yes, start small, try and see what happens. This is his we build sustainable networks, for the people, by the people.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 1 points 1 month ago

I think your thinking is wishful. lol But I would love to see it happen!

[–] DSN9@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

and I quote you:

My favourite Band for example. They only use Instagram and Facebook. It's infuriating. I just log in via browser every few months.

How many others feel the same way? At the next concert you say, they've got another page, on an open source network, come check it out. You say you're a big fan, so why support them? Never failed, never tried.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 2 points 1 month ago

You'll quote who?

[–] DSN9@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Is their one app, for pixelfed, Lemmy and mastadon, that respects your privacy? Or is 3 separate apps better?

[–] jaschop@awful.systems 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

FediLab is an explicitly general Fediverse app, though it's not designed for lemmy. There's also plenty of native cross-fedi support, as all activities are translated into ActivityPub events.

Frankly I'd recommend a separate app for Lemmy-likes and Mastodon-likes. The difference between following communities and following accounts seems to result in a lot of jank, if crammed into one app.

[–] bufalo1973@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago

I don't know any combined app 🤷‍♂️

[–] Unreliable@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I've been using MyInsta. Even it is outdated though as the dev is going through his Masters iirc. Otherwise there's a few more out there but they seem less trustworthy imo.

[–] Zoop@beehaw.org 3 points 1 month ago

This is what I've been using, too, for the same reason. It works for me, buut I don't really do much other than view (and maybe comment on) posts from local community groups and message people occasionally. Instagram probably has all kinds of features I'm not even aware of, lol.

[–] jjlinux@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I've been using an app called Nora from F-Droid for a few months now. The UI is horrible, but it works.

[–] ThoGot@feddit.org 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The UI is horrible, but it works.

I thought that was a requirement for F-Droid apps /s

[–] jjlinux@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

There are plenty of awesome apps with amazing UI in F-Droid, and the opposite is also true. What does that remind me of? Oh, yeah, the play store.

[–] scala@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 month ago

So I was looking into this and istander won't actually be shutdown. Just the version of Instagram that the API pulls from. It's still going to work just fine.

Alternatively if it does shutdown. Theirs https://myinsta.app/

[–] sunstoned@lemmus.org 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Personally, I use NativeAlpha (PWA wrapper) and tweak the permissions until it just barely works for my needs.

My favorite tip is to set the PWA default address to instagram.com/?variant=following -- which is JUST the accounts you follow with no recommended content / doom scrolling fuel.

[–] JayGray91@piefed.social 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I use either MyInsta and InstaPrime. Mostly been using the latter more though.

[–] nivellian@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

InstaPrime looks promising. Imma try it for a month and see how it copes. Thanks for the keyword 👍
