Chinese propaganda is rampant on the fediverse. We need to discuss ways to combat this. One group- memes or something is wholly controlled by Chinese state actors. What do you think?

How do you define "Chinese propaganda" and why do you think CCP even cares about a place as small as Lemmy?

As a side observer, I just see some people being more loyal to China and others to the US. This does happen on a decentralized platform where you can't shut down the other side of the discussion.

Overall, Lemmy remains America-centric and America-dominated on all fronts, so if there's any bias, it's here.

Of course it is. Its what the block button was made for.

One group- memes or something is wholly controlled by Chinese state actors.

As one of the moderators of !memes@lemmy.ml i encourage OP to look at the sort of posts i make and tell me - do you really think i'm a "Chinese state actor"?

Do you think all these posts i make in, eg, !hoch@lemmy.ml and !goodnews@lemmy.ml and !badnews@lemmy.ml and !eleven@lemmy.ml... these are all part of a carefully-crafted cover, and I'm actually being paid by China to delete totally-not-racist posts depicting their president as a yellow cartoon bear?

And for this service, to maintain my cover, they also pay me to create memes like this and this and this and this and this and this (and defending that one against less informed nerds) and this and this and this (a small sample of my OC here)?

And do you think China paid for this understandable explanation of asymmetric cryptography using high-school level math, because someone asked, deep in a thread about a service which I'd also already debunked the snake-oil privacy claims of?

Really?

Thanks op for 引蛇出洞,although I think most CCP apologists on Lemmy are 自干五 rather than paid state actors. Lemmy simply is not that important as Reddit in terms of natural viewers and AI scrapping.

I do hope those yankie tankies are actually being paid because every penny CCP spent on propaganda is one penny less spent on terrorizing its own people and neighbors. It would also be very pathetic to ideologically devote oneself to defending authoritarian regimes for free.

I also notice a large swing in the upvote counts of this post in the past few days. As our beloved 教員 once wrote, 事情正在起變化.

I'm sorry to say that lemmy is not popular enough to be on CPC's radar.

The CPC's propaganda budget is mostly focused on what Chinese people would read if they get over the great firewall (mainly YouTube and Twitter).

Second to that is the general "feel good" stories, like scenery, food, or panda (recently high-speed trains), aiming at the mainstream Western public. You may see those on lemmy, but it's very unlikely that the state propagandists are the ones posting them here.

That's because these "community" type social media sites will inevitably come under the control of bad actors, or initiated by some.

I was hoping Lemmy wasn't like this, I guess I'll keep looking for a new home.

[–] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 16 points 17 hours ago

lemmy.ml is just like that, maybe you want to look for a new home instance.

[–] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 9 points 15 hours ago

Leave .ml, ban instance. 90% fixed.

Sinophobia will get you nowhere. Those "Chinese State Actors" on the Fediverse are largely Western crackers who read theory and oppose Imperialism. You shouldn't bogeyman an entire nation you don't know anything about, this is xenophobic and also works against the working class.

[–] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 8 points 16 hours ago

I tend to agree with sentiment. Its more useful idiots type then cynical profesionals feeling.

I’ve noticed a lot of pro Israel propaganda and post critical of Israel and their many crimes getting removed

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 4 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

It’s propaganda, period.

Every top news post in .world is some tabloid outlet, reposting another source, and mods do nothing about it.

Normally, I’m fine with that “old internet” feel of craziness flying around everywhere, but mimicking Reddit’s structure so closely makes things feel less diverse/discoverable, and more like echo chambers blotting out the sun… which is exactly how previous Reddit alternatives died.

Capitalist propaganda is rampant on the fediverse. We need to discuss ways to combat this. Most big instances -generalist, tech or something are wholly controlled by bourgeois people who would rather uphold state violence than democracy. What do you think?
