no meta may challenge (wip?) (media.piefed.social)
submitted 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) by pieland@piefed.social to c/fediverse@lemmy.world

i came up with the idea of a no meta may challenge super last minute and i’ve been enjoying a migraine all day, so i’m taking a break. not a great time for a break when the first day of the challenge ends today but it’s probably fine

i know it’s not great and not everyone will agree with my choices; at the end of the day i think we can all at least agree that the alternatives are still an improvement over staying with meta

thinking i might want to increase the font size on the challenges

if you think it’s a good idea, feel free to edit, share, make your own, idc, fucc the zucc

Until now I never saw something written in OpenDyslexic that was this unreadable

I know that you did it with good heart for accessibility but with this colors is really unreadable

[–] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 hours ago

good idea! but you should post a link to fedibook because I found 2 other projects before the one you meant: https://fedibook.net/ and https://codeberg.org/sindum/fedibook

at first I found this: https://github.com/pwoolcoc/fedibook
a very old fork of a project that had some development since

I appreciate you for fighting the good fight here, so please don’t take this as criticism:

This shit is colored like the Epstein files lmao

[–] pieland@piefed.social 1 points 1 hour ago

i know i’m starting to get a bit edgy with the criticisms, so i just wanted to let you know that your comment keeps making me laugh and i do take it as a compliment in a way

Why did you decide to write it in OpenDyslexic?

[–] pieland@piefed.social 5 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

i used opendyslexic for accessibility (i am not an accessibility expert by any means, so i apologize for anything that’s off)

[–] BruisedMoose@piefed.social 7 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

If you're going for readability / accessibility, that bright orange background is probably not the way to go. And I can't imagine it was helping your migraine.

https://venngage.com/tools/accessible-color-palette-generator is what I used for the color palette

i took the hex code of the meta logo and inverted it (anti-meta theme) for a hex code of #F9971E and generated a palette. this was one of the palettes. i went with a more monochrome palette for people who may have trouble distinguishing between colors.

as i do not have any relevant visual impairments myself, i cannot comment on the readability/accessibility.

saying “i don’t think this is accessible” is not helpful (you’re not the only person who has said this) as it does not tell me what is accessible.

i myself am severely disabled and unable to work and living in extreme poverty. i came up with this idea, shared it on social media, and asked if anyone would be willing to make a graphic. no one did.

if the cause matters to you, you always have the option to make your own graphic. i literally cried several times making this because i do not have the energy, the time, or a usable device to make this, or the money to purchase anything usable. i made it on my phone on the free version of Ibispaint, which is the equivalent of using ms paint with a trackpad, if not worse. i have shaky hands and painful joints.

as for my migraine, i can’t comment on that, as i have chronic migraines. we are advised to avoid noise and bright screens. if i do that i’m stuck listening to the convincing voices in my head screaming at me to kill myself while still being in physical pain. i prefer to continue to be in pain while deluding myself into volunteering time and energy i do not have trying to make this world a better place only to achieve nothing and to have ended up wasted time and getting shit on for it, while everyone else who does have the time, energy, and resources complains that no one ever does anything.

if i took spent hours on this (yes, this took hours because of how unusable the app is), other people can take a few minutes to explain to me how i can make this accessible, if it’s something they actually care about and aren’t just virtue-signaling. or! they can take a few minutes to make an accessible graphic themselves

Okay, looking at that accessibility tool with the hex you provided (nice on the anti-Meta rationale), I think what makes it difficult is that white border around the text. It's adding a low contrast border to what would otherwise be high contrast black-on-orange.

https://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/?fcolor=FFFFFF&amp%3Bbcolor=F9971E

See what I mean?

[–] BruisedMoose@piefed.social 1 points 1 hour ago

I apologize if my comment came across as overly critical or unhelpful. All I meant by it is that to my eyes, the brightness of the orange with the white border around the text is a harsh combo. It would be more comfortable with a darker background that contasts more with the white.

See, you did more research than me, so maybe I'm totally wrong.

It's a good job, I 100% support the graphic and idea behind it and I learned about a couple new services too. Don't let any of us get you down. You're DOING something and you should feel good about that.

For a Threads alternative that isn't directly aimed at furries, you can also try Lemmy or Piefed

[–] odd@scribe.disroot.org 14 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I think this is great OP, what you are doing is good. I think you'll enjoy the challenge and the benefits it will bring you.

To the rest of you commenters out here that are deriding OP: Positive changes in another person is something good and should be encouraged instead of criticised and picked apart.

[–] pieland@piefed.social 4 points 14 hours ago

thank you, but it’s unironically not for me (unless you count the benefits from friends leaving meta)! i’ve never had a threads and i recommend wafrn because i genuinely love it. i do have an insta, but i rarely use it. never used whatsapp… have facebook but i don’t use messenger much; been using signal for awhile. i do use facebook… but again, not very much.

i wanted to do a challenge this month for people to switch their search engines away from google, but then i realized “no meta may” sounds better :) google can be another time…

[–] StillAlive@piefed.world 7 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I don't have Instagram, deleted Facebook a long time back. But I can't get rid of WhatsApp. It is used by everyone in here.

[–] pieland@piefed.social 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

could encourage people to move to signal while keeping whatsapp maybe… until one day hopefully no one uses whatsapp anymore :)

[–] StillAlive@piefed.world 4 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Even businesses use WhatsApp for communication. 😐

[–] pieland@piefed.social 1 points 9 hours ago

i’ve heard that - but if signal becomes popular enough with individuals, i imagine businesses would eventually switch over to signal as well

[–] Keshara@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

Never heard of Fedibook, nice I have something new to research, thanks!

I just recently moved on to Misskey/Sharkey to replace Bluesky and X for myself. Signal is the next one I need to look into a lot more as I still use FB Messenger and need to get away from it

[–] pieland@piefed.social 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

fedibook seems really new; i think it’s only been up for a few weeks? but it looks close to facebook, and apparently has an option to import facebook posts

i couldn’t find any screenshots of it, but i took some of my own after making a throwaway account

for me, it just feels closer to facebook design-wise than friendica and diaspora. every friendica instance that has a normie-friendly url seemed glitchy or just flat out took forever to load. before i stumbled upon fedibook, i was thinking about recommending spacehey or bliish (which are also interesting, but spacehey is invite-only right now; can’t remember what i didn’t like about bliish)

[–] Keshara@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 13 hours ago

Thanks for those!

Yeah seems to be much closer to that FB design than what I remember with Friendica. I tried it about a year ago and moved on from it pretty quickly, same experience that it just seemed buggy and slow.

I'll keep an eye on Fedibook, thanks again!

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 4 points 14 hours ago

Friendica has existed for quite a while, created specifically to replace Facebook. Just another thing to check out.

[–] pieland@piefed.social 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (1 children)

i don’t know if this one is really any better, but my friend suggested changing the layout to something more like this

edit: she suggested more changes, unfortunately what im using to make this is the mobile equivalent of ms paint with a trackpad, so i’m in hell :)

[–] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 hours ago

I think the first one was better, it feels less crowded and weeks more distinct

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Wait, PixelFed?

I thought that was an open-source good thing, with a Fediverse-counterpart of PixelFed.Social, no..?

[–] Blaze@piefed.zip 1 points 6 hours ago

Pixelfed is indeed a good thing
