Hey, I almost had that treatment! I was never infected with EBv, then had a transplant, and the kidney carried it and it gave me a rare cancer because I had no immune exposure to it before.

But my body managed to fight it off and platinum chemo got rid of the cancer

Now we just need an antibody that gets rid of the Epstein class specifically.

It's called class consciousness

I think a weapon or pointy sticks should do the job.

[–] rekabis@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 hour ago

Or a vertically-sliding blade of some kind. A lot more theatrical, that one.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 4 points 11 hours ago

And William Barr as well.

[–] brianary@lemmy.zip 32 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

This could be a big deal for MS, which is thought to be related to Epstein-Barr.

[–] arcterus@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 13 hours ago

Tbh it's linked to a ton of things (lots of cancers), so it'd be a pretty big deal in general if they're able to scale it into something widely usable.

Middle school had me convinced that herpes was one of the worst things you could get and that having it would make you an outcast weirdo.

College taught you to just ignore the cold sore?

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 26 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (2 children)

~~It's herpes simplex 1, the one known for cold sores. Although HSV2, known for genital herpes, has start becoming a cause of cold sores.~~

I was wrong

[–] Australis13@fedia.io 29 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Herpes simplex 1 (HSV-1) is not EBV (herpesvirus 4 aka HHV-4). Right family, but different virus.

EBV causes mono aka glandular fever: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epstein%E2%80%93Barr_virus

Yup, I've done a strike out on my mistake. Thanks for the correction!

No it’s not, at least not according to Wikipedia.

Epstein-Barr virus is a different herpes virus that causes mono, which is not the same as HSV1 with its cold sores

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 2 points 6 hours ago

Thank you for the correction. My bad for skimming the article about it.

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 12 points 19 hours ago (3 children)

Who thought to name it Epstein-Barr?

[–] Davel23@fedia.io 51 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Probably Doctors Epstein and Barr.

[–] Kommeavsted@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 47 minutes ago

Dr Epstein went on to invent the Epstein drive in the early 23rd century.

[–] Goodlucksil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 14 hours ago

Anthony Epstein and Yvonne Barr, more specifically

[–] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 21 points 17 hours ago

It’s been called that since the 60s. Epstein is also just a last name.
