That will absolutely decimate Oregon's job market when companies take all 20 data center jobs to another state.

DATACENTERS EMPLOY HUNDREDS OF WORKERS!!!

For a year or two, during construction. All contractors. After construction, what? Maybe a hundred people on-site?

Why will no one think of the poor, starving, trillion dollar companies? It's NOT FAIR that they have to pay the same amount as the POORS! /s

[–] Burninator05@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago

Dont forget that every last one of the construction workers will come from out of the area and are supporting families someplace else.

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not a hundred. We're talking a dozen on a busy day. Last time I was on-site I didn't see another soul for hours.

The "imaginary-never gonna happen-will use twice as much power as the state of Utah uses combined" Utah mega datacenter might, might have 100 people employed in it eventually.

Maybe.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 30 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not even a hundred workers.

How dare you! The data centers in Prineville supports dozens of families! /s just don’t ask where the reservoir went…

[–] EarlOfSam@quokk.au 4 points 1 day ago

Christ, Prineville

Please tell me you're joking. I'm sure you're not, but it's like slapping a Amazon Super Center in Drain.

[–] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The 2 years its under construction, sure.

Then it staffs them with like...20 people. Oh no.

I hope my state requires the same.

But, it should be more--pay the full cost of expanding the power grid plus some additional amount beyond what they need for the use of the state, and pay for ongoing maintenance of the expansion.

Why? Because fuck 'em, that's why.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 20 points 1 day ago

Because that's fair, and these people should have to pay true market value and the cost of healing the environmental damage. If that includes desalinization and reforestation, so be it.

Oregon ratepayers have been hit with six consecutive years of rate increases amid what PGE says is an unprecedented rise in demand for electricity, of which data centers are a major driver.

I bet the rates will continue to rise regardless. PGE has had historic pay and bonuses for their top levels in these last 6 years while boasting record profits.

Fun fact, the biggest shareholder of Portland general electric is blackrock.

The IOU model for utility ownership is fundamentally unacceptable. These utilities should be publicly owned.

[–] LemmyFeed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 22 hours ago

100% agree, especially considering it's a monopoly and I literally have no choice in electric provider. I'm a captive customer who must pay what I'm charged, I can't shop around or "vote with my dollar", and I can't go without electricity, I'm legally obligated to keep services connected to my home.

huh. just thinking out loud. i'm wondering what it would take to have a nice little balcony solar panel i could plug into my rooftop array and then maybe unplug and take camping with me. or unplug and use as an emergency supply when the grid goes down and plug into my camping inverter because that's how i'd be using it anyways, and then i can get rid of that big ugly gas generator in the yard.

i figured out how to get it to work camping already, i am just thinking about the roof part. i should probably get an expert if i do it. i ain't wanna fuck with the electrical on the house more than a switch.

[–] LemmyFeed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I've been thinking something very similar. I don't have any existing solar but there's these balcony solar setups, that are all the rage in Germany, coming to the US, that just plug in to a regular outlet or battery storage. Not enough for whole house power, but with a good enough battery system you could probably get decent runtime for essential power needs.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Well like we've got a good solar setup [edit already] but I want my camping solar right? For the ebikes. And why the fuck put it on the shelf when I'm not camping

It will be quietly repealed or ignored entirely

[–] other_cat@piefed.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Another option that has actually happened in other places: sue them into compliance! It doesn't even matter if you win or not, what matters is making people look down the barrel of legislative costs while you have infinite money!

[–] voytrekk@sopuli.xyz 17 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Or they will find another state that is cheaper for them to build in.

+1 for Idaho, they deserve it.

[–] LemmyFeed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago

We can only hope!

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

This would be even better.

[–] pdxfed@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

Time to close that barn door now that they've all left. Nice work legislators!
