2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate.

5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW

Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed.

No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.

6. No linking to piracy

Don't share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine.

We don't want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

So they predicted the right wing YouTuber who reviews movies and games and drinks alcohol on screen. And their entire personality is being a whiny drunk bigoted bitch.

lotta people here don't seem to get the purpose of the third panel. They know they're full of shit.

Yep. Either very few people actually reread this strip or their literacy is so low they didn’t realize the whole point of the strip is that “video games suck now” is a brain dead take.

[–] Mordikan@kbin.earth 44 points 21 hours ago (3 children)

This is called "rosy retrospection".

While they were saying games suck, kids were playing games that today they look back on with fond memories. Those kids then grew up to say the same thing about modern games. Every generation does this. It's not unique.

That's the point of the comic I think...

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 17 points 20 hours ago

Yeah this is pre Oblivion. This is in the era of Wind Waker and Super Smash Bros Melee. Yes, some issues were present, but this is two years after Majoras Mask

[–] valar@lemmy.ca 5 points 18 hours ago

This is true, but it's not just as simple as "things were better in my day" for no reason. The experience of video games has changed, demonstrably, from what it was decades ago. If you enjoyed the aspects of gaming from the past that aren't part of the experience today, then they do indeed suck now, from your subjective point of view. So the comic isn't wrong. It will happen to youuuuuu!

so if this was released june 2001, some notable games released within the previous 12 months (american releases):

diablo 2 (june 2000) tony hawk pro skater 2 (september 2000) pokemon g/s (october 2000) zelda majoras mask (october 2000) timesplitters (october 2000) final fantasy 9 (november 2000) counter strike (november 2000) paper mario (february) black and white (march) zelda oracle of ages/seasons (may)

and upcoming games same year:

sonic adventure 2 (june) max payne (july) devil may cry (august) silent hill 2 (september) gta 3 (october) first xbox w/ halo (november) burnout (november) metal gear solid 2 (november) smash bros melee (december) final fantasy 10 (december)

dont really see where the sucking is? and you could include at least two dozen morergames here

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago

The “games suck now” people have always existed. The comic is just ridiculing them.

When I was in high school I used to think that PA was really smart because of the lengthy monologuing. Today it just reads like lorem ipsum drivel to me and the punchlines are mostly contrarian edge lord shit.

[–] mctoasterson@reddthat.com 4 points 15 hours ago

You just described Tycho/Jerry's actual personality: "Thinks he's a lot smarter than he is."

Around this same time would have been the old flash cartoon, "The Decline of Video Gaming", which accurately predicted the trend of all genres taking on RPG elements, perhaps even more than they thought possible. I'm not quite sure where this pessimism came from, as we were hot on the heels of all of the mega hits that came out in the late 90s, and everyone was quite aware of imminent releases of the early 2000s at this time, like Super Smash Bros. Melee, Final Fantasy X, and Metroid Prime.

[–] missingno@fedia.io 5 points 18 hours ago

Holy shit, forgot all about that one but just hearing the title took me way back. What a time capsule to look back on.

Maybe some of those accents haven't aged so well though...

[–] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 20 hours ago

What a coincidence, that is about how long it's been since Penny Arcade was relevant.

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au 6 points 20 hours ago

Even the characters of PA have aged.

People think things suck in the present because they look to the past and feel things seemed better. Then in the future when things are actually worse, you realize that what was previously the present wasn't actually that bad because you look at the current state of things and see it's actually gotten even more shit than before. This is the downward slope of enshitifcation.

[–] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

Then you forget that everything that got worse was also replaced by something better.
