I'm still crazy salty about when I invested ~$250 to get the Substance Painter + Designer suite, and got the "We'Re JoInInG tHe AdObE fAMiLy wooo!" Email....

Followed by the "Don't worry we'll still let you get indie licenses" email...

Followed by the "It's gonna be subscription only but you can still keep the never-will-be-upgraded indie version we're discontinuing."

How can the likes of Adobe and Autodesk be so garbage and yet everything they taint with their miasmal existence is or becomes "InDuStRy StAnDaRd"? At this point I refuse to touch Adobe stuff partly because their membership is harder to quit than a gym, and the rest is just out of sheer spite.

I just refuse to use commercial creative software at this point. The blatant rug pulling is just expected now.

Oh I know that voice!

It was the one that told me to "stop torquing now!" When I ended up breaking a crossed bolt off in an awkward blind spot on the side of my engine....so now the VTT solenoid is held in by a little epoxy. Because otherwise the engine would have to be removed and a machinist would likely need to just destroy and rethread that thing.

Oh, the shame...

No I'm not a mechanic, I'm just not "pay a mechanic $600 to install a $40 part" rich. :D

But this is exactly why I won't get into something like electricianship or other dangerous stuff. ADHD sometimes just squelches that little voice and I'm left asking myself why I did something so stupid and wishing I could go back 10 seconds.

If the consequences were life or death? Yeah no way I don't need a sudden brain-lapse killing/maiming me or someone else.

I bet you got that toaster to run DOOM didn't you? 😏

"Sorry your pacemaker has the silliest little flaw but the patented blobbed firmware could only be updated with some vendor program on Windows XP that was reliant on XP-specific libraries but Service Pack 2 broke it after the company went under..."

Same stuff with car electronics. Maddening.

B...bluetooth?

Oh no. Reverse that flow of data and "Hackable brains" are a thing. Cool. /s

That's exactly what I did with my old Core2Duo laptop because I couldn't in good conscience sell it with factory-loaded Win-Vista LOL.

If somebody with knowhow gets it, they can put whatever they want on it. If someone without? They get a solid OS that gets security updates. Win-win.

And for being one it's shockingly stable. It's in a bit of flux right now as things are between X11/Wayland, but it's definitely not as iffy as bleeding-edge Arch or anything. :)

Oh geeze, so much. "Hey just grab Signal real quick, it's super simple and private and SMS seems to get worse as time goes on anyway. Plus I can send you better pictures and videos!"

"Lol meh why you tryin to sell it to me."

It's weird, the things people really dig in their heels on. They'll download apps for the silliest thing but "another chat app" is such an inconvenience.

It's the only reason I think reddit dot com still resolves at all anymore. If the users weren't the product, to both the company and other users, better alternatives would be the norm by now.

Using now and I'm so excited that Wayland is like 300% more usable for me on Nvidia than it has been. This is really exciting. Everything is super smooth.

I just wish it had a better way of telling me "All this theme stuff is incompatible" and letting me update it. That's a bit wonky right now...

Hey there, a little late to the party maybe but I think you might wanna consider Nextcloud Memories!

https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/memories

I'm not AS big on the rest of Nextcloud (but NC is really cool), but Memories alone makes it worth it. I haven't messed with making albums a whole lot yet, but basically it works a lot like Immich, except I'm pretty sure it respects folders and uses the directory. It's got object/face tagging and reverse-geocoding.

Also sorts everything by EXIF so you don't end up with that awkward "All my memories happened yesterday" scenario.

Also has an app to auto-upload. I use Tailscale to connect my phone safely to my network, and it uploads when I plug it in to charge.

Sincerely, thank you for explaining this perspective. You make a lot of really good points!

You're right that it's a mess out there and stuff will always get stolen. And no, I never expect to coast on anything for a lifetime, but I still think if we were to abolish copyright as it stands, there should still be something enforceable that benefits creators of works.

One who publishes a book or a game should accept piracy as a reality, but having zero recourse for say, anybody uploading your exact work a dozen times on Steam under their own names would be pretty terrible wouldn't it?

If it were abolished out in the open, yeah, we'd basically need to not have to earn money anymore. Otherwise, there would simply be no point to anybody making anything.

We're already seeing such a threat from un-checked ML scraping everything in existence.

Thank you so much for the valuable discourse. I hope you have an awesome day :).

(P.S: I think you meant "pursue" rather than "peruse")
