I think you're right - women are also socialized to seek out social/interpersonal connections more than men; this is a big factor in why the suicide rate for elderly men tends to be significantly higher than for elderly women.

This doesn't explain the 60 year olds but with the elderly (70+) women in my life, the vulnerability to misinformation is also an artifact of their comparatively poor levels of education. They were schooled with the expectation that they would be SAHMs.

Yikes.

I had a conversation with Pi which tries for empathy. It was really weird because every now and again it did sound like it was interested in me or cared about me. Reminds me of that Philip K Dick story about the murder bots that look like wounded soldiers or lost children.

Fantastic painting!

Seems to me @gregorum is talking about Demoiselles d'Avignon's impact on art a a whole. It was a very influential painting.

Bush on the other hand is only notable because of who painted it. It's a common naive realism style.

The two articles you posted appear next to each other in my feed and because of the thumbnails, at first glance it looks like they are from each side of the portal.

Blood quantum laws were originally laws made by colonizers in the US deciding who got to be Indigenous based on the percentage of "Indian blood" they have - colonial era Australia did the same thing to Aboriginal people. Slavery-era classifications like "octaroon" are another example.

I was using it more broadly here to mean the essentialist belief that ethnicity is dna-based.

Blood Quantum is also a horror movie :-)

...implying that she believes in Blood Quantum as well. Yikes.

Trans people, PoC... she was having a go at disabled people in her last book as well. I think maybe trolling has an addictive component and they have to reach further and further to get the same adrenaline hit.

downvotes go everywhere

Unless you're in kbin.social, which doesn't federate downvotes.

That said it's still handy for other kbin users and a good indication that it's been reported already.

If you were a Vulture you'd be too busy buying up 3rd world countries debt and then suing those countries for payment.

You wouldn't have time to muck around with a chatbot.

For months, aid groups have struggled to get food to an estimated 300,000 people in northern Gaza, where the world’s global authority on food security recently predicted a famine was either already happening or would begin before July.

The crisis worsened last week when the food charity World Central Kitchen, the only organisation outside the UN regularly providing hot meals, suspended operations after Israeli strikes killed seven staff members.

“WCK was feeding around 500,000 people each day with hot meals,” said Abeer Etefa, a spokesperson for the UN’s World Food Programme in Cairo. “We are feeding over a million people each month, and Unrwa [the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees] is providing food to people monthly. Between the three of us, we are really trying to push back this famine.

“But this will only work if humanitarian aid workers are operating in a safe environment – there has to be respect for their protection, because of the urgent need to access the most vulnerable throughout the Gaza Strip.”

Before I reply I just wanna say I'm not trying to fight or argue I'm just quite interested in language.

All your context-dependent examples are verbs, whereas "enshitification" is a noun - a state of being. That's why it fills a gap in English.

Otherwise you need an entire sentence to describe that process A happened to B thing and the result is C state.

It doesn't seem intellectual at all to me, I mean it has the word shit in it and its closest contender for meaning is probably "fuckedupness".

Fair enough but what word do you use instead of enshittification? It filled a gap in the language.

Bolsonaro appeared at the federal police in Sao Paulo on Tuesday to meet with officers, along with his lawyer and former adviser who was also present at the time of the alleged incident.

It's unclear how such egregiously bad images made it through peer-review.
