1s take longer than 0s to xfer, so they must be roomier.

Is it because the 1s get stuck in the bends in the pipe, but the nice round 0s can get around the corners more easily?

Other way around. The fat 0s can jam up the series of tubes, while the narrow 1s can move through more easily.

Idk the little nub on the 1s makes me think they'll lock together and make a big clog.

Yeah, do /dev/zero instead, for maximum throughput.
