I hope so, but I'm nervous. The Outer Worlds also seemed really promising at first but turned out to be so disappointingly bland. Fingers crossed though
I loved The Outer Worlds. The biggest criticism I tend to hear before reading yours is that they wanted it to be bigger, but I really appreciated the focus of it.
To be honest, I'm not even sure if I am criticizing it, in the same sense that i don't really have any criticisms of the colour beige...
It made no impression on me, it had no memorable characters or interesting ideas, I can't even remember the plot despite the fact that im sure i played through the whole thing. The only take away i had was a string of marvel level quips and an extremely thorough understanding that evil corporations are bad...
I was just, disappointed. Thats all. But my impressions are coloured by how much i wanted it to be good after playing falliut 4. Definitely do not let that influence your experience, if you loved it then i believe you 100%
Nah, it wasn't just "evil corporations bad". Believe me, I'm sick of sci-fi that's only that surface level. I thought it had a really clever take on taking things comically too far in that government became religion and corporations became governments. The kind of thing where a corporate soldier in his dying breath is reciting his company's motto. Plus I had a really good time with all of the side quests being deeply intertwined in their causality. A was caused by B was caused by C was caused by D was caused by A and C. You could unravel them all and see the effect all of the characters had on each other, where these things are typically very one-to-one in the genre.
It has good bones. It seems a shame to have built out all the art, game engine, etc and not have made it longer. I get your point in that it was tidy, but I still can't help but feel an opportunity was lost by not fleshing it out a bit.
But at the same time, I was never bored by content that felt like padding, they made the game in under 5 years, and Obsidian is a multi project studio often rated one of the best places to work, perhaps one of the best examples of sustainable game development in the industry. It's nice to have an RPG that only takes 25 hours when there are more than enough of the ones that take 100 hours out there.
Agreed. I can see this going either way to be honest.
