Having to have actual, real life humans as your social circle helps in actually socializing people. Like kittens who need other cats around to learn how to properly cat themselves. Without it they develop social issues or worse.

Is he talking literally about toasters or using it as a slang for robots/androids?
It's an allegory for any "extremely niche" interest that would have been considered super weird before these people could easily find eachother, although OP probably had furries and people like that in mind.
