Ron DeSantis bans 'global elite' lab-grown meat

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has banned lab-grown meat, saying he will "save our beef" from the "global elite" and its "authoritarian plans".

"Florida is fighting back against the global elite's plan to force the world to eat meat grown in a petri dish or bugs," Mr DeSantis said in a statement.

The first-in-the-nation law prohibits anyone from selling or distributing lab-grown meat in Florida.

Similar efforts are under way in Alabama, Arizona and Tennessee.

Lab-grown or "cultivated" meat was first cleared for consumption in the US in 2022.

The process of making cultivated meat involves extracting cells from an animal, which are then fed with nutrients such as proteins, sugars and fats. The end product is genetically indistinguishable from traditionally produced meat.

Studies have suggested that eating cultivated meat can cut carbon emissions and water usage, and free up land for nature, compared to eating traditionally produced meat.

That's like banning synthetic diamonds because there wouldn't be any African children suffering in the mines.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 50 points 6 months ago

That's probably on his list too.

What the fuck is wrong with these people?

What's next? Ron DeSantis bans smiling?

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 38 points 6 months ago

I mean, he's only able to manage an uncomfortable grimace, so that tracks.

Florida has a big animal agriculture sector. I wouldn't be surprised if Texas and a few of the central midwestern states follow suit. There's a ton of money in the land and machinery used in mass producing ground beef, and if you can just lab grow it at a fraction of the price you're going to kick out the struts on a central revenue stream for 20th century factory farming.

What’s next? Ron DeSantis bans smiling?

So long as he can get a kickback from someone who profits from frowns.

Gotta love this "free market" where competition is made illegal.

[–] RidcullyTheBrown@lemmy.world 21 points 6 months ago

Yeah, “global elite” my ass. He found the perfect opportunity to protect his funders and give a speech that caters to idiots.

Side note: as a non US person, hearing US officials talking about a “global elite” makes me chuckle. My friends, you were the global elite since WW2 ended and possibly still are

Florida has a big animal agriculture sector.

Huh. TIL. Totally didn’t expect that.

DeSantis should go and milk some alligators for a photo op

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 2 points 6 months ago

Those are some photos I’d like to see

Florida way down on the list for beef production, even further down on a per capita basis. Texas produces about twice as much as the next handful of states. Nebraska is a strong second for head of cattle, and 90% of the agriculture in Nebraska is tied directly to the beef industry, either in feed, slaughter, or raising.

Banning lab grown meat isn't on the radar here.

Desantis is just pandering. Pandering is what they do.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago

Unfortunately, you don't need to be high on the list of producers, just lobbyists. And I believe the state legislator who submitted the law was himself a cattle rancher.

[–] morphballganon@lemmy.world 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Republicans love telling women to smile though

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 months ago

DeSantis to ban women from smiling unless asked to by a man

[–] grue@lemmy.world 50 points 6 months ago

The party of "freedom" and "personal responsibility," folks. 🙄

Because that's definitely not a big-government nanny-state dictating what foods people are allowed to eat, not even a little bit!

[–] blazera@lemmy.world 43 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Anti capitalist ron desantis wont let the free market decide

[–] isles@lemmy.world 18 points 6 months ago

Capitalists only espouse the free market when discussing labor. Otherwise, they love regulatory capture.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 6 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Commie big-government nanny-state dictates what foods people are allowed to eat.

[–] squiblet@kbin.social 35 points 6 months ago (2 children)

He would be so lost without empty conservative buzzwords

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 13 points 6 months ago

Hell, even WITH them he's barely coherent the moment someone asks a tough question!

[–] radiohead37@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Shallow politician. It seems his policy is just to be an asshole and own the libs.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 31 points 6 months ago (2 children)

The stupidity of this man never ceases to amaze.

[–] Avg@lemm.ee 8 points 6 months ago (2 children)

I honestly thought he'd chill after being embarrassed on the national stage.

[–] isles@lemmy.world 11 points 6 months ago

Has embarrassment stopped anyone in the GOP?

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 6 months ago

He seems the type to double down. I expect a spectacular meltdown someday.

[–] morphballganon@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Is he revealing stupidity of his own or simply counting on the stupidity of others

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 2 points 6 months ago

Good question. Both, perhaps?

[–] Missmuffet@lemmy.world 18 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Wow, what a hero. Really fighting the good fight. He's truly doing gods work :|

[–] Beldarofremulak@lemmy.world 11 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

Gotta pertec those rancher corporations until the lab meat companies are able to bribe him with more free speech

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Florida isn't exactly known for its vast cattle herds, is it??

[–] Mint_Raccoon@kbin.social 1 points 6 months ago

I live in Florida (unfortunately). Cows are pretty common in my region.

[–] DdCno1@kbin.social 14 points 6 months ago (2 children)

"Global elite" - I can hear that dog whistling from all the way over the Atlantic.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

I guess he thinks food science is akin to space lasers? 🤷

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Yep. I had to point that out when this was posted in News. For those still confused, look up 'globalist dog whistle.'
