Oh man. When I was in the Navy, I had the game boy advance. Advance wars had this sick turn based mode, where you could get your moves in, and then stick it in your pocket and wait to hand it off. We'd have four players playing games that might take all day, sometimes days. Just make your moves, stick it in your pocket, and whenever you find your shipmate, pass it along.

We did that at our lunch hour in high school. We had a super strategic friend that took the entire lunch hour. That pass-around mode was peak early 2000’s multiplayer.

Sounds like hotseat. A remnant of the good old days.

The good ole days where you had to actually know real humans to pay multiplayer.

How did the battery last that much? AFAIK the GBA didn't have any sleep mechanics... Or was one pack of batteries able to hold 12-24 hrs running the game non stop?

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'm trying to recall. I know we always had a solid supply of rechargeables underway. I also distinctly remember that there is a kind of blanked out hand off screen between players because of fog if war. I don't recall it having any kind of sleep function. But I know it could run for several hours no issue. I don't recall having to mind the batteries in particular.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Some Game Boy Advance games actually had a software-based sleep mode!

You pressed L+R and Select.

On top of that, I was always really impressed by the GBA’s battery life but maybe I’m just old.

Same, I just don't remember ever bothering about the battery life (unless it turned red) but with that long gaming sessions it would be a concern for kid me probably.

I even remember buying a nice glacier blue rechargeable battery pack and never using it!

I wish I could buy everything in glacier blue now.

I'll be honest, it doesn't just "look like Advance Wars". It looks like a rip-off. I love AW but I wish they went with a more original art style, like Wargroove did.

[–] hyperhopper@lemmy.world 17 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Some of the sprites look so identical that I cannot even point out a difference without going back to the original game to look.

[–] tonytins@pawb.social 3 points 5 days ago

It’s like TF2 but with tanks.

[–] Hyphlosion@lemm.ee 2 points 4 days ago

Fine by me. I’ve been wanting more Advance Wars. And that’s what we’re getting.

[–] CastorSulMush@lemmy.world 0 points 4 days ago

Yep, didn't even try to make it look different. It's pathetic.

This is the second article I’ve seen from this site recently where the author doesn’t mention what platforms the game is coming for. C’mon, guys. Have a little respect for your readers.

If anyone is curious, I did a few seconds of research so you don’t have to.

  • PC (Windows + Linux via Steam)
  • Steam Deck support is mentioned
  • PS4
  • PS5
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Xbox Series S/X

This is great because Nintendo charging $60 for Advance Wars Re-boot Camp on the Switch was way too high for me to consider it.

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (2 children)

And it didn't piggyback into a new title. I suppose there's still time for that, but not really. It was just a half-assed re-release, with the Nintendo price tag. They're not even the best AW games.

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Plus the move away from pixel graphics really hurt the asthetic, but I think they knew without doing something graphically that people wouldn't fork over $60.

[–] Hyphlosion@lemm.ee 1 points 4 days ago

It was hyped up until Russia invaded Ukraine, then they cancelled the launch date because of that. True story.

Then it was unceremoniously released at a way later date.

[–] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago

I'm looking forward to having a new Advance Wars that benefits Nintendo in no way whatsoever and works on my platform of choice.

[–] SolidShake@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I like wargroove 2 the most.

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

How does it compare to the first? I don't know why, but the first one didn't really click with me. I think the CO being on the field made it feel too fire emblem rather than advance wars.

[–] SolidShake@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

It's more or less the same just bigger.
