Does everyone remember during Trump's first presidency, President Xi had just made himself president for life. Trump brought this up at a rally and said "maybe we should try that" and the crowd cheered. It was never a joke. Everything he says is testing the waters to see what reaction he'll get. Now there's a group trying to get him elected to a 3rd term. I think a Republican congressman or two is also pushing for this.

[–] jsomae@lemmy.ml 4 points 43 minutes ago

ok he's serious.

[–] 4grams@awful.systems 33 points 2 hours ago

this is how he operates.. he denies, then jokes, then encourages others to joke, then when they do he gets serious, then act like everyone was always serious.

this man will NEVER willingly give up a shred of power.

I saw this interesting video, and there are not lots of ways for him to run in 2028.

Modify them to read ‘Trump: 1946 - 2028’.

[–] huppakee@lemm.ee 4 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Please don't, I would buy them and finance Trump :(

[–] nonentity@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Where did I suggest purchasing anything?

[–] huppakee@lemm.ee 2 points 2 hours ago

You really are a genius, i wasn't sure before.

[–] Civil_Liberty@lemm.ee 14 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I have thought to myself for a long time.. what would happen once people started putting up Trump 2028 flags in their yards? What would happen if those houses started burning down as a result?

[–] pleasegoaway@lemm.ee 3 points 1 hour ago

I mean, at LEAST throw a handful of pocket salt on their yard each time that you walk by.

Maybe find out their names and give generic complaints to their employers.

There are shirts that say "Rewrite the rules," so it's pretty clear that they know this isn't allowed and are trying to start early and normalize tearing up the Constitution.

Also:

Republican senators on Capitol Hill later downplayed Trump's comments, with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, of South Dakota, telling reporters that Trump couldn't seek a third term "without a change in the Constitution."

Thune also said Trump is "probably messing" with reporters who ask about the possibility of a Trump 2028 campaign.

So they're going with the tried-and-true "it's just a joke, bro" defense, until of course it isn't.

Asked to comment, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt referred NBC News to the Trump Organization “since it’s their website,” adding, “but it’s a cool hat and I suspect it will be highly popular!”

New tagline just dropped! "Dictatorship: It's A Cool Hat and I Suspect It Will Be Highly Popular"

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 hours ago

This is the party that says "he means what he says!”

And now it's "He's probably messing".

[–] stardustsystem@lemmy.world 14 points 4 hours ago

Just like Project 2025 'Wasn't the plan' until it was the plan.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 15 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

What do you get when you cross a penis and a potato?

Donald Trump.

[–] foofiepie@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago
[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Small penis.

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 43 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

"Rewrite the rules" is a clear campaign slogan.

This is a HARD line for me. This fucker doesn't get to run again.

[–] huppakee@lemm.ee 2 points 2 hours ago

Well, running for president isn't really running if the result is already fixed. So you have that going for you.

[–] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 10 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Hopefully also literally unable to run

[–] ironhydroxide@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 hours ago

You think he's currently able to run? If so I have a medical report you'll love to see.

[–] WolfmanEightySix@piefed.social 37 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

He said he’d do this. Why are any USAians surprised?

[–] podperson@lemm.ee 6 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I’m glad to see “Americans” getting used less for obvious reasons, but every time I see that written I read it as “us asians”.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 minutes ago

I vote for Stations.

[–] BenjiRenji@feddit.org 8 points 4 hours ago

Even if he isn't going to run, why would he not try to sell such hats and t-shirts? It's money in the bank.

[–] kbal@fedia.io 22 points 5 hours ago (4 children)

Turns out it's nowhere near as complicated as everyone said it would be to change the constitution. All you've got to do is buy yourself a Supreme Court.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

The Supreme Court has often stood against him and is now. He thought he could buy them, you thought he could buy them, they don't agree with either of you.

[–] kbal@fedia.io 2 points 2 hours ago

Long may I continue to be proven wrong.

[–] suicidaleggroll@lemm.ee 18 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

Nah, turns out you don't actually have to change it at all. If nobody is willing to enforce the rules laid out in the Constitution, then it's just a worthless scrap of paper that means nothing. He can just do whatever he wants now, nothing matters.

[–] huppakee@lemm.ee 4 points 2 hours ago

Every child knows a rule only counts if a) you're caught breaking them and b) you're punished for breaking them.b

[–] Vanilla_PuddinFudge@infosec.pub 5 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

and ignore them because they're incapable of enforcing anything. Turns out half of our representatives are nazis and the other half are spineless cowards.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

They're not cowards.

They're collaborators, getting rich off it just as much as the others.

[–] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 hours ago

He's just ignoring it anyway.

[–] DirkMcCallahan@lemmy.world 13 points 5 hours ago

Susan Collins is very concerned.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 15 points 5 hours ago

I guess Trump merch is exempted from the tariffs?

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 3 points 3 hours ago

It's pitchforks and guillotines time.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

He may be old, but mentally and emotionally he is like a child.
