I really wish studios would just start hiring writters and making original content. Im so bored of everything being ripped from other media.

"A24" is the only thing here that gives me a tiny bit of hope.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Hope they make something trippy like The Green Knight

Video game movies have a chance of being good, they are almost always trash with a slim chance of being good. For a game with a lot of lore and no plot, the chance of being good is close to zero.

Maybe a miracle will happen.

I’m cautiously optimistic. The lack of a plot in the game leaves a lot of creative room for the film and the deep lore gives them a lot to work with. Also it’s Alex garland and a24 so like. I’m in.

There is a plot?

[–] darthelmet@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

What… uh… I can’t imagine this movie being weird enough to feel like a movie based on a FROMSOFT game while still being accessible to the wide audience needed for a big budget fantasy movie to make money.

After seeing The Green Knight I trust A24 to get this right. They are not the kind of studio that cares about the lowest common denominator. Don’t get me wrong, they can be very approachable/broader appeal when they want to as we see with their Oscar runs. But their movies definitely often target more niche audiences. Elden ring has a large enough fan base that they can count on a decent number of people showing up.

I'm sure they'll fuck it up.

Name one good videogame movie. One.

[–] GamingChairModel@lemmy.world 15 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

It's not a movie, but the Fallout series had a great first season, and I'm looking forward to the second.

[–] trungulox@lemm.ee 2 points 1 hour ago

The last of us was great too. Not a movie still. But .

[–] Bob_Robertson_IX@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

First, it's A24 and they put out amazing movies .

Second, Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Bros Movie, and I'm not sure if it would count, but Wreck It Ralph are all good video game movies.

[–] dubyakay@lemmy.ca -2 points 3 hours ago

Super Mario Bros. (1993) was a cult classic.

The 2023 movie is forgettable garbage.

The Sonic movies are fun though. Knuckles TV as well.

[–] Goronmon@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Its funny in this case because not "fucking it up" effectively means making a movie that's barely related to the game outside of the basic setting.

[–] ogeist@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I wonder it is going to be THE Elden Ring story or An Elden Ring story, a small contained story in the Elden Ring world could fly really well, bonus points if Patches kicks the protagonist off a cliff.

[–] hypnicjerk@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

my preference would be a film about the shattering, giving us some (but not too much) more insight into just what fucked the world up so godsdamned much.

but that would need to be extremely faithful to the lore and character designs and i just don't see hollywood showing up for that.

[–] simple@lemm.ee 13 points 6 hours ago

The original Mortal Kombat movie. The newest Sonic movie was also pretty good imo.

But yes, this can probably go very wrong.

[–] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 1 points 3 hours ago

Silent Hill

[–] aliceblossom@lemmy.world 6 points 5 hours ago

Normally I'd agree, but it being A24 makes me very hopeful.

[–] OmegaMan@lemmings.world 5 points 5 hours ago

Does Last of Us count? Sonic movies and Mario were pretty decent too.

[–] dellish@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

Street Fighter. It's fantastically bad.

Alex Garland has made some pretty good movies, so there's a chance. I thought his instincts with annihilation were pretty much spot on. But yeah, movies based on games do not have a great track record.

Can you make a movie out of pure lore? Maybe a prequel, like The Fall of Hoarah Loux or Ranni's Rebellion? Will the audience be required to parry things?

[–] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

Sorry, best we can do is having the audience dodge roll every scene.

I kind of hate Elden Ring. I've played plenty of these games, but I've died easily like 2 or 3 times more here. And, more often than ever, I don't know what to do next, which is easily compensated with another couple of deaths. Nah, I will never watch this.
