Not bias, but I was surprised to find out how Wikipedia is censoring information surrounding ChrisChan.

All of the articles mentioning him in English just say he's an internet personality, and his English Wikipedia page has been removed.

That kind of censorship doesn't sit will with me. What else are they keeping from us?

[–] rational_lib@lemmy.world 8 points 1 hour ago

They're really against anything nice that can be achieved through cooperation, aren't they?

already have it all downloaded

downloaded a backup yesterday

everyone with sense and 160GB should do the same

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 6 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Just 160gb? I will get a USB and back up the whole thing.

25ish for your language of choice, 130 something for media files

very manageable, grab that copy

There is an app called Kiwix if you use Linux (I think it's a flatpak) or WSL for Windows! :) It lets you download different languages and sizes. I just learned you can use graphical apps for WSL now, wew.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

That is cool WSL accomodates graphical apps, but after the recall Windows feature that snapshots everything, I'm about to remove Windows from my last computer that still has it. I really just need to figure out if my Steam save files will transfer to Linux since my Elden Ring character is level 220 or something crazy. I can't even use WSL at work any longer because security locked us out of admin permissions. Boooo!

They absolutely should, if now, you can probably run it in a VM shame box. I have a little windows set up on mine for some specialist apps. When games are installed via Proton on Linux, they usually are set up to mimic the file structure for windows.

Could I use this to set a monthly job that runs and updates my local copy? Does it download/update changes made since my last sync or would it just redownload and replace the previous months in this situation?

I just downloaded the 23G file or whatever. If there is a way to checksum portions of it and run a script against the online checksum to detect differences, that might be one way. The only problem is that it is now being modified for political purposes. This version might be the best we will ever get. I almost wish we could download a pre-2020 version. It would eliminate both the slop and any influence that came after the sudden wealth gap increase that occurred during the pandemic.

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 4 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

It doesn't work like that (yet), but it is the easiest way to keep an offline copy. They have more info about this here: https://kiwix.org/en/frequently-asked-questions/

[–] Edgarallenpwn@midwest.social 1 points 1 hour ago

Thanks! Finishing up the work day but will take a closer look soon

[–] hakobo@lemmy.world 11 points 4 hours ago

There's an article here on how to utilize Wikipedia offline, and you can look under the "Where do I get the dumps?" section for links to downloads.

damn look how correct and helpful these mfs are

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 12 points 5 hours ago

Sir you seem to have a bias for presenting unbiased facts. This simply can not be.

[–] obinice@lemmy.world 11 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Hey no fair, the US is just copying us! (UK)

We targeted Wikipedia first recently waaaaa

[–] Vex_Detrause@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Are you guys having problems with your politics? I heard COVID vaccines is not free for everyone.

[–] ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

We've had problems with our politics for as long as politics has existed. It's a miracle we have anything nice, and there have been people undermining and trying to claw back anything nice we have on Day 2+ of us getting it.

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 13 points 5 hours ago

I wonder if they're going to investigate conservapedia for bias.

[–] abbiistabbii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 42 points 10 hours ago (4 children)

How long is it going to be until America has a great firewall ala China.

[–] rozodru@piefed.social 50 points 9 hours ago (4 children)

well it's already happening. look what recently happened in Mississippi with age verification.

protip if you're American and you ask "how long until America has such and such" chances are, 9 times out of 10, it's already happening or has happened and you're just not aware.

I do tech support on a global company, and some customers have started to demand their cases not to be readable for our usa based colleagues, nor the shared info hosted on usa clouds. So that wall is somewhat already there.

[–] abbiistabbii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 6 hours ago

Understandable. I kinda wish the UK would copy the EU's move for digital sovereignty and invest in FOSS/Self Hosted shit but the OSA has kinda made me a bit worried about that. You could get it past the Flag Shaggers easy though.
