The UK has announced large-scale policing reforms, including new investments into artificial intelligence and increased Live Facial Recognition (LFR) deployments.

The Home Office has pledged to fund 40 new LFR vans as part of a national program to expand facial recognition capabilities in town centres across England and Wales, according to a white paper published on Monday.

How 1984 of them.

Labour is doing almost as much damage as Reform would do… nobody asked for all this nanny state shit…

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 hours ago

Reform wouldn't win if they didn't help out.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 8 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Still, emphasis on the word almost. The key here is to swap out Labour candidates, not lose to reform next election.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

No. You don't get to say this is ok because it's Labour. This is authoritarian power grabs. Nobody voted for this because this was never shared with the public.

Labour, Tories and Reform all need to be cast into the wilderness for decades over what's going on right now.

The last dude in this thread to say basically the same thing at least had to balls to name other options and all they could come up with was the Anti-NATO party for one and the party which is literally just Corbynn and his buddy Sultana (1 seat) for the other.

[–] Zombie@feddit.uk 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Tell that to Andy Burnham.

We're not a purely two party state, like America, that requires changing the Democrats from within.

Labour is a captured organisation. The PLP is filled with authoritarians and Friends of Israel. And the PLP has the majority of power within the party. The effort required to change it from within would be better spent in the already established Green party and establishing Your Party.

The left can abandon Labour, as it abandoned the left in the 90s.

The UK Green Party of England and Wales? Currently they have 4 commons and 2 lords. They at least had the sensibility to ask Jill Stein to stand down, but they also endorse leaving NATO which is really fucking stupid.

Your Party 2025 is just a joke honestly, I'm surprised they got more seats than Lord Buckethead.

Ah well, might as well just lie down and give up then I guess.

Of course they have, it's just the people asking for it are also the people who own, one way or another, the creatures we are presented with as political candidates. I.E. the billionaire and ownership class. What the plebs want doesn't matter, and the squeaky wheel gets the grease every time.

[–] then_three_more@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Don't worry. They'll U turn in 6 months once the political damage has had a really good chance to fester.

[–] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 6 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

They're not going to abandon the surveillance state, it will only grow. They may posture like they're putting controls on it, but at some level all of the assholes in government want this.

[–] then_three_more@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

Oh I know it's what they want. They'll still u turn though once they loose enough in the polls after the media rip them apart. Just like every right labour try to bring in ID cards. Then after they loose the next election Reform-Tory will bring it in and the same media will wank them selves so much over it that you'd think Farage got milkshaked again.

New headline:

UK POLICE GETS FACIAL FROM LFR, WATCH LIVE ON MONDAY!

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 10 points 7 hours ago

Jesus Christ, UK. What the actual fuck.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 28 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

I do not understand the governance of the UK

Why haven’t the people thrown the parties on their asses?

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 31 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

Private ownership of the media and relentless propaganda.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 19 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

See, USA, that's how you roll out an Orwellian society. This way you can identify undesirables from the comfort of your offices, and then silently dispose of them when nobody is looking. No public executions needed!

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 7 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

It actually doesn't do that. AI cameras such as flock cams have a history of misidentification, even framing unrelated third parties.

This is less Orwell and more Idiocracy.

You are an unfit mother. Your children are now the property of Carl's Jr.

[–] TORFdot0@lemmy.world 7 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Usually when you think of reform, you imagine things getting better, not things getting worse…

[–] Zombie@feddit.uk 5 points 6 hours ago

Sadly, that word definitely means things getting worse in the UK now

UK announces largest ever facial... ಠ_ಠ

recognition rollout as part of policing reform.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 2 points 9 hours ago

Yeah idk why the cutoffs are so short on some instances. Personally I think the feed would look fine with 5 lines of headline text on a post.
