I didn't even know there was a Patreon app. I signed up through the website. On a computer. Old school.

So, all business is becoming a protection racket?

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 8 points 6 days ago

Gotta love walled gardens! /s

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 19 points 6 days ago

Technofeudalism.

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 6 days ago

Gotta recoup all those fascist donations

[–] TheFonz@lemmy.world 17 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Timmy Cook is just a bean counter. He's got nothing to innovate or build. That's Apple has been buying back shares non stop. Their lead designer jumped ship a while ago. It's only a matter of time.

They still have wicked hardware, nobody is near their M5 performance/watt though

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 5 points 6 days ago

Good perf per watt, but super expensive, walled garden, internally spying and nearly unrepairable.

kinda like how youtube takes massive cut of ad revenue, which is why they switch to patreon, brand deal and promotions. 30% is pretty steep for small content creators, that isnt peddling right wing grifting.

[–] Paranoidfactoid@lemmy.world 15 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Choose another payment method. Choose another platform - web based? - where these fees don't apply. Hell, buy a throwaway droid phone to keep your money from apple's greedy hands.

[–] Scrollone@feddit.it 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Google imposes the same restriction, if you buy a digital service (such as a Patreon subscription) you need to pay the Google tax.

I don't know if Patreon got an exemption from Google, but any smaller developer doesn't for sure.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

YT influencers fled to patreon because of google doing the same thing.

There are a few EU alternatives. Why are those not being considered.

LiberaPay is one.

@Sine_Fine_Belli 😡 Tim Cook is a bad man. Do not federate with him!

[–] Bongles@lemmy.zip 12 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Hasn't this type of thing already been litigated?

[–] AngryRobot@lemmy.world 15 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Yes it has, but now, all of our consumer protections have been obliterated

Yes, it has. And Apple (mostly) won.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_Games_v._Apple

In January 2024, the Supreme Court denied the full appeals of both Apple and Epic in the case, leaving the case primarily a victory for Apple in allowing them to continue restricting app distribution to their App Store and to continue restricting in-app purchases to Apple's payment systems, but requiring Apple to allow developers to link to external websites offering alternate payment options (off-app purchases).

Makes me think why ever since Photoshop was first created, Apple became the go-to for creatives for decades, and now Apple thinks it wants more money than just the fanatics going after their latest product.

[–] stellargmite@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Apple screwed their pro market anyway. Sometime back . The history with apple and creatives relates more to print history I’d guess . Adobe needs to be ditched , and is in some areas. Windows is a shitshow as we know. There are lessening reasons to be wedded to either Mac OS or Windows as they continue to enshittify and I for one welcome it.

"Walled garden initiates universal tollbooth policy overhaul."

[–] Hawanja@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yet another reason to never ever use Apple. So if I just use the Patreon website and not an app, do I still have to give Apple 30% of my money? Seems like that should be illegal.

[–] winkerjadams@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Thats exactly how it works for twitch and other stuff. If you're on mobile go to the website instead of the app otherwise they take a cut

[–] Petter1@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Many apps either only sell on website or just make it 30% more expensive when paid via app
That is long the case

Yes! Exploit the morons as much as they're willing to be exploited!

None of them have the brains/balls to fight back.

[–] Lifter@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 4 days ago

This is the second phase of enshittification. They are hurting yhe businesses with this, not the consumer.

We will need an alternative to Patreon that even people on Patreon can go to

[–] treesquid@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

No, you need an alternative to apps in the Apple app store, which already exist. Don't pay for anything through an app on an Apple device, they will rob the creator. Pay through the Patreon web site.

[–] BennyTheExplorer@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

Liberapay, Kofi

[–] lofuw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago

Direct payments with Monero seems like the best option.

Everything else takes a cut, which they do not deserve.
