I mixed up loops and threats (Meta) and I was honestly surprised.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 24 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I mixed up loops and threats (Meta)

Unclear if typo, or intentional insult. Either way, leave it that way.

[–] Railcar8095@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago

English is not my first language. Or second. It took me a few rereads to even see the mistake.

Either way, I'll leave ir

I guess it is an "improvement" that we can replace corporate brain rot with community brain rot, but this isn't going to change my mind about short form video.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 16 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (3 children)

Funny enough I tried a few videos without signing up, and it doesn't seem as bad? It's a HUGE improvement, in fact.

Tiktok was putting me off because main content in its peak was "teenagers dancing."

Meanwhile the "average age in lemmy is 20 years older than reddit" rule applies to loops. I doubt they will ever have "npc streams."

Still dislike short-form content tho so I will pass, but pretty good community nonetheless.

[–] Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz 10 points 4 days ago

Can confirm. There are lots of "boring" videos on Loops. Like, check this out. Yes, it's an entire channel dedicated to chickens. I mean, it's nice and relaxing, but nowhere near as addicting and engaging as tiktok or instagram videos. I'll still count that as a win.

Regardless, @billinkc still rocks.

Tiktok was putting me off because main content in its peak was “teenagers dancing.”

I mean it depends on what you want to get from social media. I would argue that things got worse afterwards when it stopped being teenagers dancing and started being right-wing influencers spewing their propaganda. Ultimately, social media should be made by the people contributing to it and how it develops depends on what the users want, not on what you want.

For now it seems to be mostly very "fediverse".

I do not understand the desire to have alternatives to the world‘s dumbest format. We had good video platforms that worked. Users had agency. Short form video stripped everything away that made the internet a great place once. It‘s poison for society. It needs no alternatives. It just needs to implode.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 4 days ago (2 children)

It should be horizontal, amirite?

[–] termaxima@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 days ago

That makes no difference. The problem is the length and the passive acceptance of what the app serves to you.

[–] sixty@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago
[–] RalfWausE@feddit.org 3 points 4 days ago

Well, it is what de create, right? Why not encouraging people creating short form videos that are decisively not brain-rot?

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 22 points 4 days ago (1 children)

For content creators it needs a built-in editor instead of forcing every video to be one take. And for consumers it needs a really good recommendation algorithm. The reason TikTok is so successful is that its absurdly efficient (and incredibly invasive) algorithm will find you content you'd like within probably minutes of setting up an account.

I like that this exists, but I don't think it's ready for mass adoption yet.

[–] unknown1234_5@kbin.earth 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

yeah, as much as I hate algorithm-based social media short form content needs it. you scroll from one video to the next with no way to pick and choose which ones you interact with. normally you can just not click on a post and it gets nothing from you, but short form content does not allow that. that means the next video has to be chosen for you, and that regular feeds will not work. that mean you have to have some kind of algorithm or you will have to interact with tons of videos you have no interest in to get to one that is worth watching to you (which is the current state of loops).

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 6 points 4 days ago

I mean Loops has a For You page, but the algorithm seems much worse than TikTok (unsurprisingly). Partly I'm sure simply because there is so much less content to pull from, so it might seem worse than it is purely because there might not actually be anything worthwhile on it to recommend to you in the first place. But TikTok's algorithm is famously extremely good at identifying things you would like, even things you might not know you would like yourself. To be able to be an alternative in the brainrot delivery market, Loops needs to be able to come at least closer.

[–] sexy_peach@feddit.org 22 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'll check it out once it's on android, this one more than any other fedi alternative will live or die with its content I think

[–] sexy_peach@feddit.org 10 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Good to hear. Trying it out now

it has actually good content too! and it's not all drowned in politics, which is good. most people don't wanna hear the 100th news article about trump in a week.

[–] Burghler@sh.itjust.works 17 points 4 days ago (1 children)

And it's only on iPhone, bruh

[–] ZoDoneRightNow@kbin.earth 18 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Why would that be? I have it on my android right now

[–] Geth@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's not on play store. You have to side load it.

[–] ArchEngel@lemmy.ca 23 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Side load it? Don't you mean install it, the Play Store is not the only way to get apps

[–] Geth@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Right, fair, it's just not on any android app manager, you have to deal with it manually which is not great.

[–] mizule@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 4 days ago

you can use Obtainium!

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'm guessing maybe they mean instead of iPad too. Which is true.

[–] Burghler@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

Oh sry I meant it being apple store only. But that's also hilarious

[–] MxRemy@piefed.social 11 points 4 days ago

Btw, you can get it on Android through Obtainium and then it'll keep itself up to date, rather than just regularly getting a new .apk. That should do until the f-droid availability shows up

I just learned that loops is developed by the Pixelfed project! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixelfed#Loops

[–] DieserTypMatthias@lemmy.ml 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 days ago

They're packaging it for fdroid, so it'll be out soon

[–] sober_monk@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Awesome, I've been looking forward to this! I warmed up to short-form videos, but still refuse to use TikTok and could use an alternative to YouTube Shorts.

[–] Rhoeri@piefed.world 10 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Denied access without an account, no thanks.

[–] spaduf@slrpnk.net 17 points 4 days ago

Strange stipulation for a fediverse app.

[–] tja@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

You can just use the website: https://loops.video/

It just doesn't make that much sense since you probably want to store your place in the feed somewhere.

[–] deleted@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago (2 children)

You can only watch like 10 videos without an account. And no search.

No thanks!

[–] lofuw@sh.itjust.works 15 points 4 days ago

Thanks for pointing this out.

This "sign up to view" nonsense needs to end. Whoever suggested it should be tarred and feathered.

[–] harmbugler@piefed.social 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Is that just for the loops.video instance, I wonder? Maybe alternative instances allow you to watch without logging in?

[–] deleted@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Not sure to be honest. I couldn’t find a list of instances.

I might consider the video format platform if they ease the login requirements and allow 3rd party apps which allow you to choose what instance to connect.

[–] nat1@ttrpg.network 7 points 4 days ago

Guess I'm getting loops, thanks thread below this one for promoting it and this thread for telling me it's on the store.

[–] Teknikal@eviltoast.org 3 points 3 days ago

Had a look out of curiosity only scrolled through about 5 in my browser but noticed the audio still continued from previous videos. I'd say that's rather a big issue.

[–] Flames5123@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What instance should I make an account on? I can’t use my lemmy account, right?

[–] Naho_Zako@piefed.zip 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Well, according to the Join loops website, Loops federates with Mastodon and Pixelfed only, so you do need to make an account either on Loops or one of those other media sites. Do note that your Masto or Pixelfed instance would need to federate with Loops instances. I wish I could verify but I don't think my Pixelfed instance federates with Loops.video

As for which instance to pick, you can see a list at fedi.db and filter by Loops under the "All Software" drop down menu. Do you want the main popular instance? Do you want to focus on a topic? Do you want to stick with your country? There's not many instances as of now, so maybe stick with the original Loops.video, since you can always migrate later.

Edit: Instance migration isn't available yet, but it's planned on the roadmap for Q3 2026.

You wrote "F-Droid" wrong.

[–] neo2478@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

In the very minimum aurora, but F-Droid FTW

[–] Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Before the app was released, I noticed that suddenly there were many new users. Previously, making an account wasn't open to everyone, but apparently that has changed too.
