I want to write their next article: "If bad things happen, that will be bad. How this will affect you and why you should worry."

[–] Pringles@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago

It's salon, the bar to write for them is almost on the floor. Just make it absurdly obviously left wing. Facts aren't required.

Everyone's thinking of drones dropping bombs, but they aren't thinking of the true horror; kamikaze micro drones. It doesn't take much to kill someone, and micro drones can be wicked fast. Imagine a swarm of drones the size of a finch or smaller, each carrying a tiny explosive. Imagine these drones flying next to people's heads and detonating themselves. You could clear out a whole building with very little structural damage.

You're thinking of kamikaze finches and I'm thinking of Terminators.

Sure, but what kind of range do you get with tiny drones? Although they could probably be delivered to the vicinity by some other vessel. Like cluster warheads but with a large swarm of exploding autonomous drones.

[–] I_Has_A_Hat@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Quite a bit more than you would think. Remember, besides the potential for a drone carrier, these drones wouldn't need power for the flight back.

A non-rechargable battery can also have significantly more capacity. A suicide drone likely doesn't need to be recharged.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago

I've already watched dozens of Russians die like this.

[–] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 1 points 9 months ago

Hoping it will be treated like biological chemical warfare. It may be good at killing, but that's not necessarily the best way of conducting warfare

[–] brickfrog@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 9 months ago

It's okay, killbots have a preset kill limit. Just send wave after wave of human soldiers at them until they shut down.

[–] treadful@lemmy.zip 15 points 9 months ago

Manhacks incoming.

Ironically this was posted by a bot.

It’s already here. I realized that the moment I saw a Ukrainian suicide drone chasing two Russians on a motorcycle who were trying to out run it. They didn’t make it, but it definitely felt like something out of a dystopian Hollywood movie.

[–] Liz@midwest.social 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I'm of the understanding that those drones have pilots.

[–] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 2 points 9 months ago

Yeah no unmanned vehicles fly that well. And it's extremely illegal but idk if that really stops anyone. It did work for some types of ammunition though, and biological warfare? So maybe?

[–] crystalmerchant@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago

Someone link to slaughterbots

I love the composition of all the prop blades lining up centrally.

Glitter will be a self defence weapon.

Wouldn't this mean that eventually warfare would just be drone on drone combat then? I'd prefer that over lives lost. But it does mean absolute mayhem before everyone is on a level playing field though.

[–] coffeebiscuit@lemmy.world 25 points 9 months ago (1 children)

It would mean drones on civilians.

[–] dhhyfddehhfyy4673@fedia.io 6 points 9 months ago

As is tradition.

[–] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago

Richard Gatling had the same thought.

Your last sentence implies that everyone can be on a level playing field, which is just not the truth though. Think about rebel groups. They might use the odd drones here and there, especially with another state benefactor, but they'll inherently have to use human resources over robotic ones due to the lack of infrastructure, funding and potentially even knowledge required to produce those things. This might sound okay at first glance when we think of true terrorists like the IS and others. But what happens when the state actors become the villain and the terrorists actual freedom fighters? Especially given our current climate of rising authoritarianism within the west. Then combine AI killer swarms with AI mass surveillance and it is pretty much impossible to root out said evil again.

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago

If you want to get dark eventually only the evil will survive and the various evils (if multiple) will then duke it out via drone on drone

[–] pr06lefs@lemmy.ml 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Yes, just drone on drone warfare once humanity has been fully eradicated.
