I don’t understand the reference.

[–] carrylex@lemmy.world 12 points 15 hours ago

That guy did 68.5k comments in ~1.5 years. WTF? That's like ~140 comments per day.

They were a part of our history, but all good things must come to an end. I’m glad they’re in a better mental state now.

[–] QuandaleDingle@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This must be some deep Lemmy lore that I am not privy to...

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 49 points 1 day ago (2 children)

He was an incredibly prolific poster. Unfortunately I found him to be rather abrasive, I don't recall any particular interaction but I do get an "oh yeah, that guy. Glad he's not been around much lately" sense when I see that name.

[–] socsa@piefed.social 5 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

Was he the one who had like a mental breakdown and moved to the UK and then stopped posting entirely?

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 11 points 4 hours ago

He moved to the UK to escape the Trump regime since his daughter is LGBTQ, a decision that I think turned out to be a good one at this point.

[–] Windex007@lemmy.world 103 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (3 children)

I'm glad they were around because they were singlehandedly posting an obscene amount which really helped lemmy not feel like a ghost town back then.

But, they clearly had mental health issues. No healthy person would post whatever he was doing... probably ~~1000 posts a day~~ (did the math: 100 posts avg per day. One post every 14 minutes for 2 years straight). Considering HOW unwell they were, they were relatively good natured. But you could see thier worldview was rooted in pretty serious personal issues.

They were tedious, and frustrating, condescending, and a know it all. Absolutely couldn't admit they were wrong... not even admit that weren't perfectly right. But... they weren't ok.

I was glad when they disappeared, but mostly because I was really hoping they had been intervention-d by loved ones. To go cold turkey one day must have been BRUTAL for them.

All in all I think he was the right person at the right time. Thier faults actually DROVE engagement, which was important for a blossoming platform. I don't think anything they said or did was out of malice.

A complicated person. I really hope they're doing better.

What I took away from this: social media platforms apparently feed, cause, and thrive from metal health pathologies.

[–] Eric@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 hours ago

There is such a tiny proportion of users that actually interact with social media by posting, commenting etc, but a large proportion of them are completely nuts, myself included

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 16 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

They moved to the UK because his daughter is trans and didn't want to raise her in the US. Soon after moving, he disappeared.

My head cannon is he found peace out there and didn't feel obligated to post nonstop

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 hours ago

As I recall she's a lesbian, not trans.

damn that is a great eulogy

[–] TWeaK@lemmy.today 27 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

How dare you post this without any link @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world

Edit: Looks a bit different today, how could have a last post 2 years ago in the OP but have a last post here just over 1 year ago?

[–] teft@piefed.social 26 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

OP might have news@lemmy.world or the instance lemmy.world blocked. That would prevent those posts from showing in the feed.

For me squid's last post is one about belugas mimicking human speec.

[–] StarvingMartist@sh.itjust.works 15 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

There's no way it's been two years

[–] lokalhorst@feddit.org 7 points 21 hours ago

That's because it has actually been 1.3 years

[–] USSEthernet@startrek.website 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Anyone ever figure out what happened to them?

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 39 points 1 day ago (3 children)

They're not active here, but they're still active on Bluesky.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 14 points 22 hours ago

I'm glad they're doing ok. I actually didn't mind their drama at all, they just had a bad string of things going on in their life. I recall them moving to Europe (or saying they were) at some point and then gone.

[–] fleem@piefed.zeromedia.vip 22 points 1 day ago

oh. well that's good to know then!

glad i don't have to feel a weird pang of "uh oh wha happen"

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 11 points 23 hours ago

I'm glad he's okay!

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 21 points 1 day ago

I miss their work on the OOCC comics sublemmy.

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 7 points 23 hours ago

I really thought I recognized all of the big posters around here but I don’t recall this guy at all.

[–] PP_BOY_@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I can't even remember why I disliked this person but I did

[–] Texas_Hangover@lemmy.radio 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Dude was a schizo drama whore lol. It never ended, until it mericully did.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 10 points 1 day ago (4 children)
[–] Texas_Hangover@lemmy.radio 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Drunk ass version of mercifully 🤣

[–] QuadratureSurfer@piefed.social 3 points 5 hours ago

Username checks out.

[–] luthis@lemmy.nz 9 points 1 day ago

Mercifully + miraculously

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Think they meant mercifully

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Mercurially

[–] PriorityMotif@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

iirc they posted one of the few posts I've had to remove from !dull_mens_club@lemmy.world nothing serious, it just wasn't really appropriate for the com.

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 8 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Man i don't know what it was but we never have anything exciting enough to need to be removed

[–] harcesz@szmer.info 8 points 19 hours ago

Now don't get excited out that, or you will have to be removed by the community.

[–] PriorityMotif@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

At first I had to remove some posts but then I revamped the rules and that really helped. the community has grown into its own thing over time. The most I had to remove was recently due to a spat people were having in the comments. I never have had to ban anyone.

Basically a serial shitposter for a few years. Came over during/before the whole Reddit API migration.

I also remember a lot of left leaning (duh) political memes and a fair amount of posts about how doctors couldn’t figure out his ability to swallow food or some such.

Because of that, FlyingSquid was unemployed and posted in a lot of communities daily and would comment frequently as well.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 17 points 1 day ago

He didn't just shitpost.
