Have you played Astro Bot? It's phenomenal. It is the best non-Mario 3D platformer ever made. And possibly in the Top 3 if you include Mario.

And also a PS5 exclusive. Eww

[–] M137@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That has no relevance to how good and deserving of an award it is.

[–] AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works 7 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

IMO, it does. Awards showcase and highlight 'best of' games, but what's the point of highlighting a game that is inaccessible to a significant portion of the gaming community? You could potentially make the argument that their purpose is more towards recognising the efforts and success of the devs, but that's not the aspect of awards that are being discussed in this context.

I feel that making a game exclusive can sometimes make better games, because you're making one game instead of 2 or 3. Even with games that are on multiple systems, one version always ends up being "the definitive", and the other versions are not up to the same standard because they're put out just to appeal to a wider audience. Focusing on one system let's you put everything into making your game great instead of making it accessible.

[–] AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works 3 points 16 hours ago

That may have been true a decade ago, but nowadays unless you're trying to squeeze out top-tier graphics performance (which isn't the case with this game) you only need to worry about the control scheme. The code can be compiled for multiple platforms.

Your right, it should have been belatro

[–] sylveon@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Balatro is the objectively correct choice.

[–] p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Because the Game Awards hates indie games.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It Takes Two won 2 years ago.

so are you saying they don’t like the genre of indie games or that they don’t like independent studios?

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"Indie game" is not a genre...

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Oh come on are you really going to play this game?

Do you think all “indie films” come from independent filmmakers/tiny studios with no big connections?

Do you think all “indie rock” only comes from independent bands without studio deals?

Indie absolutely connotes either the above or a style/genre. Everyone knows this. It’s a very flexible term that can vary from person to person. It’s a “vibe,” it’s classic “I know it when I see it.”

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Having connections is not the same as having a major publisher. Something isn't indie because it's a genre or just a small group of people.

It's people like you who try to muddy that.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 0 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

It’s already muddy dude I can’t believe we are having this debate in 2024 lmfao

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 1 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

You’re absolutely right. Indie is a murky term that people use very liberally. I’m glad we agree that being pedantic and rigid about a definition when the rest of society isn’t out of some weird need to be a contrarian online “well AKSHOOALEE”-ing folks is not only unproductive, but it kind of makes you a tool.

Have a great rest of your week. Feel free to have the last word. I’m sure it’s very important to you.

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 0 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

You're robbing the right to exist as indie games from actual indie games, allow corporations to make games like Dave the Diver take the spotlight away from real independent developers, simply because corporations are becoming wise to masquerading as an indie game.

Have a terrible week. You're a bad person.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 2 points 14 hours ago

I just wanted to come back and apologize. I’ve been in a pretty shitty mood the last few days and I’ve been letting a lot of stuff get to me.I shouldn’t go online and take it out on other people and just spread that misery.

It doesn’t matter whether or not I think the word is flexible. I shouldn’t talk to people like that, I don’t know a thing about you and I just started attacking you. Again I apologize

[–] blackris@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know about that. I am saying, that I wouldn't count It Takes Two as an indie title.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

“Indie” is a very nebulous term regardless of the medium. “Indie rock” is a sound now. “Indie movie” is a style/genre now. “Indie game” is definitely a style.

[–] blackris@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, absolutely. Just for me, this feels like a typical AA game. Indie is more like Noita, Mouthwashing or Vampire Survivors. But you are right, there are no definitive borders or anything.

  • It's decently-made (rarely the case with new titles in current year)
  • Concentrated industrial-grade nostalgiabait
  • Doesn't require the player to be a skilled Gamer
  • Judges determine the majority of the score (who are probably not skilled Gamers)
[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The nostalgia was also a lot of games that have languished lol it just reminded me how many games Sony has abandoned or lost the thread of.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 1 day ago

Cry about it... Astro Bot was fucking awesome.

[–] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

The people who review the games are the same people who vote for the winner, and Astro Bot was the best reviewed game of the year.
