If there's one thing Japan loves, it is economical competition. There are like 40 different ways to pay at a shop, it's absurd.

[–] sadTruth@lemmy.hogru.ch 5 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Innovation and competition at it's peak: You get to choose the color of your noose.

But (presumably) no cash or crypto because someone has to take a 3% cut.

[–] goldenquetzal@lemmy.world 1 points 15 minutes ago

Surprisingly a lot of Japan is cash only. Stores like this also have cash inserts built in.

[–] rottingleaf@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

That's probably because toxic corporate culture (we-ell, one can sometimes find contributions of heroes from Japan into FOSS projects, so maybe not so toxic, especially when you look at NetBSD) they already have, so they simply can't afford breaking market laws, not in the slightest.

The rest think they can, which is wrong.

The economic stagnation in numbers is regrettable, though. I would prefer countries like Japan to grow (not on the map, I mean playing tall). And cultures.

That's not absurd, that's awesome

[–] Zaphod@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 18 hours ago

Absurdly awesome!

Wow, all of that and no crypto. That's impressive.

Japan is permanently in the '90s (and I love it).

[–] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 45 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I've seen the phrase "Japan has been stuck in the year 2000 since 1980"

[–] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 5 points 14 hours ago

It's almost like Japanese boomers keep maintaining the status quo at the expense of younger generations.

[–] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 55 points 1 day ago (3 children)

And yet everyone will pay with cash.

[–] WalnutLum@lemmy.ml 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Nah you can't even use cash in a lot of post offices now.

[–] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 1 points 11 hours ago

Wow, things have changed then.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 22 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This used to be the case 15 years ago, but unless you go to some tiny independently owned place, you can usually pay with credit card or suica. If not, then with one of those QR code payment options. I rarely carry cash anymore.

[–] kalleboo@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago

Yeah when I went over my bank statements for last year, I only went to an ATM a single time in the whole year. Mostly only need cash for stuff like parking

[–] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Idk, I wasn't there myself. My friend went there multiple times though (last time before corona) and he said cash was often/usually needed.

[–] Slaxis@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

How long ago was that? Even 7-8 years ago it was more true but it’s changed quite a bit in recent years

[–] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 1 points 11 hours ago

It's about that time frame. He went there few times between 2012 and maybe 2020, or year before coronavirus.

I can’t pay with interpretive dance?! I shall not be frequenting this establishment. Good day to you.

[–] SnortsGarlicPowder@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There is a DDR cabinet in the arcade that will turn your Dance into Tickets which are accepted.

This is one of the most Japanese things I have ever heard.

That Q+ looking one near the bottom left is how Apple Pay came to be in Japan.

[–] Matriks404@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

That's hardly a bad thing unless you can't use the most common way (e.g. paying by credit/debit card) in shops.

[–] Sat@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 1 day ago

If only that worked on dlsite

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Is there some science to what facilitates common standards vs. dotzens of islands? Convenience of the user is only one factor (if at all), see printers.

[–] Toes@ani.social 1 points 1 day ago

With that many options, it's your bad if the card doesn't work. Wow haha

no klarna...... ABSOLUTE W
