I guess they don't want your money if you're not buying the switch. Strange move, but I guess it's their prerogative to alienate more consumers.
I have the version that was made for the OG Switch and the build quality is garbage tier. Developed stick drift in both sticks in less than a month.
Really? I have the Wii U ones and they put up with a lot of abuse. The rubber on some sticks have completely deteriorated but they still input accurately.
It's honestly what's made me so bitter about the Joy Cons.

I believe that's correct. And as others have pointed out this is likely an anti-scalping measure which changes my view on it.
I do however hope they will keep a good stock of them. Having to be a subscriber is annoying enough but even when I was one I was never able to be quick enough when N64 ones went back in stock.
Or they will be worth their weight in gold like GameCube Component cables

At least it gives people who are using their switches a chance to buy one, instead of them selling out in seconds to a network of bot accounts before winding up on eBay for $300+ the following week.

I am using my Switch just fine without an online subscription. I guess Nintendo thinks I am using it wrong.
I mean, it's Nintendo - if there was a way to somehow automatically charge your card every time you say, hear or think the words "Nintendo", "Mario" and such, they'd do it without hesitation...
That's been standard for the switch retro controller releases. And yes it's been bullshit the entire time. I would have liked an N64 one.
Lol yeah. It makes sense. You don't want your peripheral for the console to sell out to buyers that just want to use it for emulation.
Does it make sense? Emulation is going to happen one way or another. If Nintendo sold a GC controller that is PC compatible, they'd at least make some money from those buyers.
It will. But for the first run you don't want people buying the console and paying for the switch GameCube access to have to ability to buy a GC controller. It's like how for sports teams season ticket holders usually get some first access to buy playoff tickets.

It’s ironic considering their early days in gaming. They were targeted by Universal over a BS lawsuit for using “Kong” in Donkey Kong and him being a gorilla like King Kong.
Now they’re pulling the same crap on smaller people/businesses and also working with the very company who did the lawsuit to bring their games to the movies.

Nintendo keeps shooting themselves in the foot. On one hand, as a PCMRer and massive fan of Valve, I'm glad to see how many are open to moving over here. On the other hand, Nintendo was the last console manufacturer I actually liked (despite their anti-emulation crusade) and so it's like a death of an era.
The future really is in console-like PCs a la the Steam Deck and Valve's upcoming Fremont.

I’ve been waiting years for 8bitdo the make a fully functional clone and they haven’t yet.
The closest they've come is a retrofit electronics kit for the OG shell last year.

People are going to buy it anyway. There is no amount of abuse a Nintendo fanboy won’t endure.
They are the only real family oriented console AFAIK. At least on PC, there isn't a huge emphasis on local coop. This makes a steam deck a harder sell to people just looking for the casual family games. Nintendo on the other hand is committed to releasing games like this with every generation, and they don't seem big on games with a restrictive age rating. I'm sure that wins points with parents.
I'd love to tell families that they should just buy a steam deck, but I don't know if it's the right choice TBH.
