He blamed a "concerted effort" by other countries that offer incentives to attract filmmakers and studios, which he described as a "National Security threat".

"WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!"

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick responded to the announcement, saying "We're on it".

This is an actual thing. I figured it was made up, but no, Trump is serious. :)

Someone should make the sub c/istrumpdeadyet? I genuinely am shocked at how this guy is still alive. Eats mcdonalds and had two failed assassination attempts and still alive

I know it hasn't stopped this administration yet, but he doesn't have that authority:

50 U.S. Code § 1702 (b) The authority granted to the President by this section does not include the authority to regulate or prohibit, directly or indirectly— (3) the importation from any country, or the exportation to any country, whether commercial or otherwise, regardless of format or medium of transmission, of any information or informational materials, including but not limited to, publications, films, posters, phonograph records, photographs, microfilms, microfiche, tapes, compact disks, CD ROMs, artworks, and news wire feeds.

[–] peto@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago

Authority doesn't exist. He does likely have the power however.

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 28 points 2 days ago (2 children)

He thinks he is a king, so....

[–] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 34 points 2 days ago

If you proclaim something and it happens because no one stopped you, you are king.

[–] ijedi1234@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"You are talking to a KING!"

"Byah!"

"And now I've struck a King! Did my hand fall from my wrist?"

[–] InverseParallax@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Joffrey is an infinitely better king than this fucker ever was.

Raped fewer children too.

[–] peto@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

Died quicker too.

[–] bitwolf@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I would find the enforcement of the statute as funny as the next person. But wouldn't the commerce secretary be initializing the tariff here not the president?

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 days ago

turns out you can in fact do precisely whatever the fuck you want if you can just write a tweet and whoever has the authority just does it unquestioningly

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago

Cabinet is part of POTUS office.

[–] jimbolauski@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

All that law is saying is that that specific law does not grant the President authority to regulate, it does not supersede any laws that do grant Presidential authority to regulate imports.

Tarrif authority granted to the President was done by the 1934 Trade agreement act, 1963 trade expansion act, and the 1974 Trade act. They give the President authority to impose tarrifs, for nantional security, nantional emergencies, or unfair trade practices. Even in those cases Congress has the ability to limit the president's power to impose tarrifs as they have the ultimate authority outlined in Article 1 section 8 of the constitution.

I figure Trump will eventually demand that Japan refer to him as Trump-sama, since anything less would be disrespectful.

"You see, they like to spread their cartoons and big-eyed people or whatever...you know, why would they make their cartoons big-eyed. Big-eyed is very shameful...shameful like anyone who doesn't use my name. They call me Trump, President Trump...but my people tell me that they're being very disrespectful in their language. So my people tell me: "They should call you Trump-sama, you know? And I go, What's Trump-sama? And they say, Japanese people say sama when they really like you, you know, and that's why they should call me Trump-sama from now on. Very disrespectful."

[–] rigatti@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

He would, but he's not willing enough to understand their culture to learn about honorifics.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There is a wall between Mexico and the US that was there long before Trump

[–] yournamehere@lemm.ee 1 points 2 days ago

i mean that joke from his last show: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/jan/15/trump-mexico-border-wall-status-migrants

soon canada and mexico might want to build one to keep the US addicts out. what times to be alive.

Okay, at first I literally did think this was an Onion headline, it's so fucking idiotic.

Unlike a lot of people, I think the orange shit-head is more evil than stupid... But goddamn, he's also incredibly stupid.

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yeah having terroriffs on something that is easy to pirate is really gonna force them to make these foreign films in the US. What's next, putting tariffs on streaming services? "Those bits must be made in America!"

[–] wise_pancake@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If Americans are pirating the movies due to tariffs that actually hurts more than the tariffs themselves.

To me this says US media is now in the trade war and should be treated as such. It’s time for the boycotts and other actions to reduce US movie revenue.

[–] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Hollywood isn't really US anymore.

CW might as well be called the Vancouver network. Star Trek is mostly filmed in Toronto. I watched an "American" movie yesterday filmed in Spain and Scotland. Even a lot of "American" people in Hollywood aren't.

There is no separation possible without him destroying Hollywood. Or, it'll be just the Evangelical Christian movies left. Even Hallmark films in Canada and they are as US as they come.

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I think this one is to prevent outside influence. American's rearly watch foreign films anyway.

[–] NotAGamer@lemmy.org 15 points 2 days ago

This is an attempt to control media. It has nothing to do with money and everything to do with silencing outside voices who can be critical of him.

[–] uberdroog@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Sure.... Aaarrrrrr

Free trade agreements are also about patents, copyright, and other IP enforcement. Trump making a trade war means that at some point we could see random people trying sell coca cola with the logo or even just the real coca cola out of a third shift without recourse for corporate.

I wonder how that concept might play out with foreign media in the US. Could mean piracy without VPN and such.

[–] Ilovethebomb@lemm.ee 9 points 2 days ago

This is actually not that far fetched considering the tariff fuckery he's already pulled.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 6 points 2 days ago

Damn. Guess I'll have to keep not paying for media.

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The world is going to have zero appetite for anything American...

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

Honestly it is going to take 50 years at least to recover

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

So He's still not over that Oscar for Parasite.

[–] JohnDClay@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Good video by Dan Murrel on the subject. There is a colonel of truth in that there has been a race to the bottom for film studios. But this is unlikely to help the situation, and will likely only lead to fewer movies overall.

[–] CheeryLBottom@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I don't think Hollywood cares what he thinks

[–] PanArab@lemm.ee 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I wonder if the same will happen to foreign video games.

"I am now implementing a 200% tariff on Genshin Impact, for supporting Chai-na. Chai-na is trying to steal our money...all of our money...and they're doing it by tricking us with big-eyed freaks. Chai-na always talks about "the Rising Sun", so why would they make big eyes, you know? It make no sense. No sense. So we're gonna tariff them, and it'll be great, because we'll show the criminals and murderers who make that game what happens."

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

trumpy and his ugly tariffs again. meh, one trick phony.
