Welcome to the largest gaming community on Lemmy! Discussion for all kinds of games. Video games, tabletop games, card games etc.

Rules

1. Submissions have to be related to games

Video games, tabletop, or otherwise. Posts not related to games will be deleted.

This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.

2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate.

We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. If repeatedly violated, not only will the comment be deleted but a ban will be handed out as well. We judge each case individually.

3. No excessive self-promotion

Try to keep it to 10% self-promotion / 90% other stuff in your post history.

This is to prevent people from posting for the sole purpose of promoting their own website or social media account.

4. Stay on-topic; no memes, funny videos, giveaways, reposts, or low-effort posts

This community is mostly for discussion and news. Remember to search for the thing you're submitting before posting to see if it's already been posted.

We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.

5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW

Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed.

No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.

6. No linking to piracy

Don't share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine.

We don't want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

Just in time for disc rot to set in

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 34 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I seriously hope they made 1:1 backups of everything.

[–] FinalRemix@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

There's probably a decent 1g1r archive online by now.

[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Literally word for word the exact comment I came to make

[–] chrislowles@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'd back it up and put the covers up as some decorative piece, but yeah the actual disks are probably on their last legs in one way or another lol

[–] kalpol@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago

It really depends so much on disc type. I have CDs burned in the 90s that still work, and DVDs that delaminated two years later. Just depends.

My PlayStation games still work fine.

Just upvote.

Me looking at a NAS in my closet: "Oh hey! Me too!"

[–] JabbaTheThott@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Damn, you can fit all 1353 discs in there? Wild

Was making a joke. You're right they're the same games but for collectors they want the wall of stuff to admire. I buy a lot of digital games but still get a lot physical for the shelf

[–] termaxima@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago

Exactly what I was thinking.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 31 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Huh. I kind of thought it would be bigger, ngl.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Aaaaand red ring of death.

We’d have achievement parties, work on multiplayer cheevos, and just compete for the highest gamescore in general.

I take it that "cheevo" is what people are calling achievements now.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's been a shorthand for "achievement" for a long time. In fact, there's an achievement in Fable 2 that's called I Did This For A Cheevo (maybe that was the description?)

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

From the name, I'm assuming unlocking it involves some sort of sex act.

I prefer when games own up to it, like how looking at the porny posters in Metal Gear Solid 2 HD unlocks "Snake Beater"

like how looking at the porny posters in Metal Gear Solid 2 HD unlocks “Snake Beater”

hahah that cheeto name is brilliant

Some do, some don't. Within the PCSX2 project, a lot of members like to call RetroAchievements "RCheevos" (in large part, admittedly, because "RA" could be confused for "RetroArch"). Personally I think it sounds kind of dumb and prefer to just say "achievement".

[–] DosDude@retrolemmy.com 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

R-chievement would be a more fitting name

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

You can't just come in with the hard R-word!

[–] DosDude@retrolemmy.com 3 points 1 month ago

Time for my 40 minute apology video. BRB, filming.

[–] smeg@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago

It sounds more fun if you read it in an Aussie accent

[–] termaxima@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago

RetroAchievements does call theirs Cheevos in many places, even some folder names, ans possibly in the code too.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Damn, even the shovelware?

[–] TheSporkBomber@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That statement better not include sneak king.

[–] winkerjadams@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Is that the burger king game

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 15 points 1 month ago

One of the 3.

Big Bumpin' & Pocketbike Racer are the other two, and the racing game is better than it has any right to be.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago

I would imagine that there are way more 360 discs out there in America

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

How many of them are FIFA?

[–] Cromer4ever@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

That would be me, if I had money :(
