I remember getting the 3DS on launch day. It was considered expensive at the time, people complained, sales were sluggish, it got a price cut within six months, and I was given various digital goodies to make up for it.

Now, people buying the console more than a year after launch are getting a price increase instead. What an insane time to live in.

Kinda figured this was gonna happen, glad I got mine at launch.

+$50 so they can sell you starfox for a THIRD time

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 2 points 9 minutes ago

I haven’t played StarFox since the SNES, so I’m actually stoked for this. I’m probably a rarity though.

This is relevant.

I was looking at the exclusive titles for Switch 2... and it's beyond me to understand why I need another Mario Kart or Smash Bros, especially with that dumbass entry price.

  • starfox command ( ds )
  • starfox 3D ( 3ds )

You know what? I'm gonna not buy it even harder.

[–] Janx@piefed.social 8 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

I remember when companies wanted you to be locked into their ecosystem and buy their games so much they'd lose money on the console. "Loss leader".

That was never Nintendo, to be fair. They’ve never really played that game like Sony and MS did.

[–] DacoTaco@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

Exactly, their hardware was usually always off the shelf parts making them cheap to make. Nes? Custom 6503. Gameboy? Custom z90 with a off the shelf dmg screen. The gba ? Its carts can be made of like 4 different type of rom.chips depending on what was cheapest and sram also came in different flavours through its life time. Gamecube/wii/wiiu? Sure was a ppc that was already designed. Switch? Same nvidia x1 that was inside some tablets and the nvidia shield.

Its what nintendo does and the engineering needed for it is on a different level imo

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 65 points 6 hours ago

As if I needed another reason to not get one…

[–] kurmudgeon@lemmy.world 40 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Nothing like paying even $50 more to play games that you've already played for the last 15 to 20 years and also repaying for those games, spending between $50 and $70 fucking dollars US for the privilege.

Nintendo have lost their goddamn minds.

Don't bother buying a Switch or a Switch 2 if you've already got a gaming PC. Just emulate that shit.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 13 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I’m not buying anything Nintendo. I would love for you to tell me how and where to emulate switch 2.

[–] Armok_the_bunny@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I don't believe there is anything that requires something unique about the Switch 2 to run, so emulating the original Switch should get you all the games already.

[–] Nawor3565@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 2 hours ago

Well, except for all the Switch 2 exclusives like Mario Kart World and the new Kirby Air Ride.

Although, to be fair, there are still a good number of first-party games still releasing on both systems.

[–] carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone 33 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

it’s called the Switch 2 because people who aren’t rich have to Switch 2 a different hobby

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

With this economy I just wait until this shows up in a pawn shop somewhere. Or more likely fuck buying that have plenty of PC games to play.

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Glad I already got one then. I even said, it'll never be cheaper than it is now, at launch. And un-fucking-fortunately I was right. I did not want to be right.

[–] Keshara@piefed.blahaj.zone 23 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

It's already ridiculously expensive for what it is. $700 in store here in Australia

[–] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 hours ago

$700 AUD is about equivalent, given its $449 USD (before sales tax, their version of the GST).

449 x $1.38 ForEx ~$620. +10% GST = $682.

The only way you could get it for a better price would be to buy it directly from Japan, where it’s only ~¥49,980 ($440 AUD).

[–] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 21 points 6 hours ago

Yeah, that will fix things.

[–] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 15 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Market conditions: Xbox and Sony already did it in anticipation of GTA 6

[–] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

In response to component price increases.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 6 points 5 hours ago

Wages are not up. I'm not going to spend that much money on a redundant toy. Pay me more then I'll think about it.

[–] llii@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 5 hours ago

I think I'll work on my backlog first. That will last a few yers.
