Will it have enough storage space to update itself if you have more than four apps installed?

[–] cbarrick@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

What is this?

I use the current gen Chromecast. Never encountered this issue.

I've got a bunch of apps.

Maybe it's gotten better since they first dropped, but this article alludes to the storage limitations. I ran into the problem with mine. I remember I had to delete apps and clear app data to get enough space to install an update.

The article also speculates the lack of storage may be why they Android version hasn't been updated on them since release.

Edit: Here's another link describing the problem around the time it launched. https://www.androidcentral.com/chromecast-google-tv-update-extra-storage-space-management

Edit #2: They may have received an Android update the first year after launch, but not since? Sorry but I've gotten a little fuzzy on the details.

Someone should tell apple about this technology

Is there even more than 4 apps in the store?

[–] sgibson5150@slrpnk.net 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Sorry but I'm not sure I understand you. I haven't had mine on in a while (got a Roku) but I recall that there were apps for all the major streaming services.

[–] VelociCatTurd@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I’m being facetious but the amount of apps between the chromecast and Roku is enormous. I’m sure it has most major apps, but as soon as I plugged it in and it didn’t even have an emby app, it went straight back to the store. Just relies way too much on casting, which I understand like any app can do but I don’t like that.

[–] sgibson5150@slrpnk.net 2 points 7 months ago

Ah I feel you. Now that you mention it, I may have had to cast something when I was using mine because it had a phone app but not a Google TV app. Syfy maybe? It's been too long.

Have they found a way to make the remote more slippery?

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 8 points 7 months ago (1 children)

You can conveniently store this one inside your butt without the need for lubricant so you will never lose it.

[–] bigkahuna1986@lemmy.ml 1 points 7 months ago

This might be cheaper than you know... Products designed for such activities.

[–] bigkahuna1986@lemmy.ml 7 points 7 months ago

No but they can beam ads directly into your brain!

[–] return2ozma@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I've dropped mine so many times I'm surprised it still works.

[–] YodaDaCoda@sh.itjust.works 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

The home button on mine stopped working a few days ago. It's quite frustrating.

[–] HejMedDig@feddit.dk 3 points 7 months ago

My remote is also starting to die. First 'down' went, and now 'home' is gone too. Luckily passthrough from my tv remote works fine, so now I'm just using that

[–] impure9435@kbin.run 14 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Not directly related, but if you ever want to watch YouTube videos on a Chromecast (or any Android TV-based device), check out SmartTube. It completely removes all ads and other annoying stuff and massively improves the experience.

[–] kawa 1 points 7 months ago

Its extremly buggy on the Chromecast 4k, I can almost never finish a video without some random error or some unexpected buffering.

[–] mundane@feddit.nu 9 points 7 months ago

Hopefully they have a usable amount of RAM.

[–] pastabatman@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

More storage and AV1 hardware support are the most obvious things they could add. Personally I just want smooth, non-laggy UI navigation. Hopefully performance will increase just by virtue of it being a newer chip.

Something I have been thinking a lot about lately when it comes to Googles products, especially the Chromecast since they started shoving it so full of ads with their Google TV launcher.

Most of the flexibility I like about Android TV over say tvOS is that it allows me to customize things like the launcher or use SmartTube over the official YouTube app. The thing is the only time I care to do such things is to get away from the mess Google made of the product or service, usually with ads, to begin with.

So it becomes this circle of I prefer it only because it lets me undo things that it pushed upon me that its competition doesn't in the first place.

Long winded way of saying I'm not real sure what Google could do with the new model that would make it compelling to me beyond a bottom of the barrel product for a guest room or something, and even then the Onn 4k is cheaper and more or less the same experience, over just replacing it with an Apple TV when the time comes.

[–] JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

Apple TV doesn't allow any customisation at all, Android is definitely the lesser of two evils with smart TVs. But really just get an external monitor connected over something like DisplayPort, running whatever OS your computer runs, for much more flexibility. There's no need for a TV to be running its own OS, and it usually just makes things more complicated.

[–] archomrade@midwest.social 3 points 7 months ago

I didn't even realize how repulsed I am by Google until I saw this. I don't have any interest in putting another data collection device in my home, especially not one that I don't have control over.

Think this article is a little premature, since they can't state any of the hardware specs for the new device.
