Imma make a game called Deerfact Park which is a deer simulator where you can do factual things that deers factually do like infiltrate a futuristic company and espionage steal their shit and then imma release it on steam take that corporate bastards.

At least they can use that money they saved for checks notes powering CoPilot no one is asking for.

[–] RadioFreeArabia@lemmy.world 12 points 5 hours ago

Why even be in the video game industry?

Well now my name has some baggage

Microsoft: "We can't compete with such great content. Shut it all down.'

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 19 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

It feels like they just announced it? Why did they even bother?

[–] sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz 19 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

I hate to tell you this, but they announced it at TGA in 2020...which was 5 years ago.

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 2 points 7 hours ago

But wait….that would be I’m almost 40. Omg you’re right. Time moves too quickly!

[–] captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 10 points 16 hours ago

Time has been repealed. Everything took place 16 years ago earlier this afternoon.

Apparently Microsoft views success as Quarterly Profits, and long term planning for the future has taken a backseat.

They've been floundering for a while. Eliminating 9,000 jobs only guarantees they'll flounder even longer.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 77 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Long term planning in general has been on a steep decline for a long time now.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 36 points 1 day ago

They know they've destroyed the planet, so why bother planning for a future they've already prevented.

[–] afaix@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago

Even when people were saying that MS turned a new leaf and that they are better at managing all the studios that they buy, and that they’ll make more better games for Game Pass to be a success, I knew that this was coming. Microsoft has been nothing but consistent in this one thing: it’ll pivot hard in one direction, pour tons of green into it, hire the best people, and then fire everyone and abandon the idea forever.

Zune, Windows Phones, Kinect, and now I guess XBOX. Well, looks like it lived long enough.

[–] AmazingAwesomator@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago (2 children)

~1,900 jobs today, even. :/

gotta make sure phil spencer gets his bonus.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

Day's not over....

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sounds like he’s on the way out too

[–] alaphic@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well, it isn't like he hasn't earned it at this point... How the fuck are you gonna spend the better part of a decade buying up a shit ton of studios - ostensibly to make you a competitive stable of console moving exclusives - to have almost all of them release what are arguably their worst games time and time again... So to compensate, they shutter studios who've just produced games almost universally lauded by critics and crowd alike, and then just say fuck it, we never even believed in exclusives to begin with, yet decided not to take a stand on it until... now for... reasons...? 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

[–] Stamau123@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

At this point i'd take an AI CEO, at least the fuck ups will be impossible instead of impossibly stupid

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Eliminating 9,000 jobs only guarantees they’ll flounder even longer.

Maybe. Microsoft's biggest revenue stream has historically been government contracts. I don't see that failing them anytime in the next decade.

But retail consumer spending? That's something that could seriously take a few hits in the next big downturn. I can see a company putting its finger to the wind and betting a '08 style recession will kill the market for console gaming in another two or three years.

[–] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

This is the likely scenario. They are predicting an incredibly unpredictable consumer market in the next 4-8 years but a very predictable defense industry market in that time.

Maybe the game just sucks?

[–] 9tr6gyp3@lemmy.world 29 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Honestly, its probably a good thing they canceled it. They were going to butcher that perfect game.

But also FYI, Perfect Dark is available on Nintendo Switch Online as a Nintendo 64 +17 Mature title, along with Turok and Turok 2

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

The best way to play it is with mouse & KB using the 1964 emulator GEPD version, imo.

[–] rockman057@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 8 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Didn't know about that. I'll have to check it out.

[–] neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 21 hours ago

It’s great! But there are some frustrating parts in the game like escort missions. Or janky psychics where a wall don’t blow up because, well I don’t know. It just didn’t one time.

[–] Weirdfish@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Is it a good port? I really enjoy turok 2 on PS4, would love to play perfect dark on something better than an N64.

[–] 9tr6gyp3@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

Sorry. Im not sure what would make it a good or bad port. Im not familiar with what the differences would be.

It was originally released on N64 and the Switch Online N64 mode seems fine. It feels like the original game.

[–] Weirdfish@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

Yeah, can see that question is vague. Lots of remakes / remasters in recent years, some amazing, and some garbage. Didnt want to invest in this and be pissed off about it.

Watched a few youtube reviews and sounds like something I'd enjoy.

[–] Denjin@lemmings.world 0 points 17 hours ago

You should play the Project64 GEPD project.

A customised emulator setup specifically to run Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark in 60fps, widescreen support, keyboard and mouse controls, support for HD texture packs.

https://github.com/graslu/1964GEPD/releases/tag/latest

IMHO it's the definitive way to experience these games on modern hardware. I've tried running both on my steam deck and the controls just don't translate well to a comfortable experience so prefer this.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm sorry.....can we take a minute here to point out that the head of XBOX is named "Matt Booty"? No? Just me?

[–] swab148@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 21 hours ago

My niece giggled at that during the Minecraft credits

[–] xkbx@startrek.website 10 points 1 day ago

@PerfectDark@lemmy.world I WON’T LET THEM CANCEL YOU

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 8 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

I’m sorry but perfect dark will always just be “that game that got made cause Rare couldn’t make a sequel to goldeneye” it was a good game but didn’t age super well and the character and world just seems a bit cheese for 2025

[–] FeelzGoodMan420@eviltoast.org 18 points 20 hours ago

I completely disagree. Perfect Dark holds up extremely well. I still play it occasionally. Of course the framerate is atrocious at times.

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 35 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Dude, after goldeneye it hit the spot hard. Loved perfect dark.

[–] GaMEChld@lemmy.world 10 points 22 hours ago

Yeah, Perfect Dark was awesome!

Good game, and I liked the revolutionary bots you could add to multiplayer to beef up a death match. I like the game but the characters and story never did anything for me

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 16 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Well, you're certainly entitled to your (wrong) opinion!

Lol it's not for everyone, especially if you started out with goldeneye. A lot of people I play with don't have the same appreciation for it, and that's okay.

And yeah, it's so cheesy, it makes people spontaneously develop lactose intolerance.

But much like the movie Evolution, I don't love it because it's groundbreaking and iconic to its genre. It's fun for me.

[–] Wilmo@lemmy.world 6 points 17 hours ago

It's cheesy because they hid cheese 🧀 in the levels

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

You bring up i played goldeneye first and that’s true, it’s why I wanted a sequel. It’s also why I will always pick Wcw vs Nwo : revenge, over wwf no mercy, it has a better nostalgia factor for me

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Well, they are very successful at canceling things!
