Eyes Up's purpose is to "preserve evidence until it can be used in court." But it has been swept up in Apple's attack on ICE-spotting apps.

Why can’t this be a web app that uses web notifications? Why does it even need to be an on-device app? That’s building in a vulnerability that doesn’t need to be there.

Make it a site. Go to the site. Pin the site. Allow notifications from site. Done.

Yes, Apple and Google are in the wrong, but why are we relying on them for this at all? Not everything needs to be a fucking app.

[–] GrammarPolice@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What's even stopping them from just uploading to archive.org?

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Cause tech illiterate people need as much friction removed as possible.

this is why we need to install apps without their approval or verification.

security my ass, they want to stop us from controlling our computers.

[–] Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They want to stop us controlling anything.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago

i was talking about phones, but yeah. we will own nothing and be happy.

[–] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 20 points 2 days ago

Stuff like this is why Google wants to restrict sideloading to "verified developers" only.
Even if an app like this isn't distributed through Google Play, they could disable the developer's account for any vague "abuse" reason.

"Which side did you choose when authoritarianism came to your doorstep?"

Looks like Tim Apple has chosen.

We really need a Linux phone.. It's like the future of democracy depends on it..

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Future of democracy in the US relies on the people being vaguely intelligent as a group. Right now tens of millions of people there are straight-up worshipping an obvious fascist as god-king and a sizeable portion of the other chunk is still desperately clinging to the idea of being “moderate”.

A linux phone would be nice but it’s not going to save the world if the people are still dumb and cowardly.

Future of democracy in the US relies on the people being vaguely intelligent as a group.

Yeah, it's fucked.

Send Apple feedback. They need to hear how unpopular working with Trump will make them.

OR stop buying ANY of their products

[–] athairmor@lemmy.world 115 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Well, both, really.

Make sure they know you won’t be buying their process anymore because of these policies.

[–] socialsecurity@piefed.social 44 points 4 days ago (28 children)

I'm glad the google play store never censors apps, oh wait. It's almost as if big corporations and now governments have no citizens best interests in mind, mind blowing.

Because corporations suck up to fashists if they are in power. That's all.

People need to realize. There is no fair access to technology. You either bend the knee or have to create your own marketplace.

So if we ever take back this country, we've gotta destroy Palantir, Apple, Google, Meta, Disney, Microsoft, Amazon, CVS (working to compile a medical database on all USAmericans)... and every company that backed Trump's Nazi campaign. Start making a list now. The corporations alone will be a life's worth of work.

[–] _cryptagion@anarchist.nexus 30 points 4 days ago (2 children)

there's no way the democrats would ever do anything like that, let alone the republicans.

[–] Telorand@reddthat.com 36 points 4 days ago

You are correct, but who said it would be the Democrats doing the work?

My camera can record videos of ICE abuse. Are they gonna ban that?

[–] extremeboredom@lemmy.world 33 points 3 days ago (7 children)

I can't think of a reason why, with client side scanning, they couldn't in the near future implement a filter similar to this. Pictures and videos deemed "problematic" could magically disappear. And of course, your iPhone will send a helpful report to the local Gestapo branch. Eventually, "Sorry, network permission is required to run the camera app. You may not capture images of law enforcement activities per executive law. The camera will now be disabled until you comply."

They actually did try the years ago. The idea was a signal could be sent to deactivate cameras and microphones on all phones in a vicinity. It was being pitched as a way to stop people from recording a live events like concerts but there was enormous outcry over the potential for abuse so it was dropped.

Why do you need an app for that, when it can be blocked from both app stores? Did people forget about self hosted websites?
